I think you are giving Brissett a bit too much credit, he is not very good and teams will stack the line to stop the run game, and Brissett has a mostly garbage WR core at his disposal
Brissett's more a game manager QB than one that can go out and win. Knowing the Browns, they'll keep trying the latter with him.

Still a punishment Browns fans can say they support while they eagerly await for Rapeshaun Watson to come back to give them something to cheer for. Masterful PR moves from the NFL, NFLPA, the Browns and more.

Brissett is a perfectly adequate backup quarterback. This is why he was brought in after all.

If Garoppolo isn’t starting for them by week 4 they’ll be in trouble.
The early part of their schedule isn’t bad, and the defense last season showed they can hold bad to average teams to low point totals as long as the QB isn’t turning the ball over a bunch. Brissett isn’t going to be asked to do much. If he can avoid turnovers, the team will be fine.

And it’s not going to matter. The season is lost.

I think they hoped for a shorter suspension for Watson with the belief they could weather a six game suspension before getting Watson, but it turns out the team has problems far deeper than just QB. Even if peak Watson was playing all season, this would still not be a great team.

This bad season has to be shaking the Browns front office to their core. They used a lot of draft capital from their tanking seasons on defense. They’ve given huge contracts across the defense. And the defense is just terrible. A lot of those high draft picks aren’t difference makers.

& from next year on they’ll be hit with a heavy cap hit by Watson

I haven't followed the Browns situation closely at all. What happened with the defense that it is terrible? It was pretty good last season wasn't it? Injuries? defensive schemes?

Well 2. But still they failed to make the playoffs lol. And their offense actually got WORSE. Terrible trade.

Today, Watson hit three receivers in the hands with catchable passes in the end zone. Two were drops (DPJ and Njoku), and one wasn‘t really the receiver‘s fault because Cooper’s feet slipped on the snowy turf as he was reaching for the ball causing him to drop it. But this is what the Browns do. They never just lose a normal game. The losses always have to be funny in some way.

Should have been more patient with Baker instead of throwing away future on Watson and kicking Baker to curb

Its not like Mayfield was dreadful as a player even when struggling. And year before trade Mayfield guided Browns to playoff victory

I'm sure Baker is enjoying having a second lease on life in Tampa. I'm actually happy for him. He seems like a good dude who got dealt a bad hand in Cleveland. He's thriving in Tampa.

Veteran QB trades have works out how often?
Stafford yes.
Wilson, Watson, Palmer (Raiders) I’d say no. First 2 more on the QB, Palmer more on raiders as they were poorly run and Palmer played well in AZ afterwards.

Alex smith from KC to Wash was for Fuller and a second so that’s not on the same level as giving up a first or multiple firsts. Wentz was a first to Indy. But at least they didn’t have to give him a big contract and phi ate the SB so just the base salary for Indy to take on.

What other QBs since 2000 have been dealt for a first or better?

There's a whole lot of national media amnesia about Baker's time in Cleveland. They're forgetting how Baker was endlessly combative with the media, other teams, the coaching staff, and fans. His play was continually up and down because he was way too emotional.

I don't think the guy you see now exists if he isn't first fired by both the Browns and Panthers.
