I don't care how good his linemates are, your 2.5 mil suggestion is absurd, it's simply not going to happen.
Giroux could and should sign a $3 million per year contract.
1) his performance is dropping
2) his age
3) he's made a great deal of money in his career already ( approx, $110 million)
4) hometown discount to stay in Ottawa
5) he knows the team needs to free up cash to sign another top end shooter.

Could and should according to who?

He could sign for any amount, but should? This isn't a team that is likely to be wining the cup next year, so why is he taking a haircut?

If he signs at 3 mil, it would likely be a multi year deal acknowledging he will overperform it at the start and underperform it by the end, problem is that is the opposite of what we need. We're better off doing 1 year deals that align with his current expections, so instead of 3m for 2 years, you'd look for a 1 year at 4 followed by a 1 yr at 2, that way when we are closer to being a cup contender, we have more flexibility.

His past earnings aren't really relevant. McDavid has earned over 100 mil, that won't stop him from signing for what he's worth when his current deal expires next year.

Expecting a hometown discount is a recipe for pissing off players and losing them.

The team is responsible for managing it's cap, not Giroux.

If there's one thing I don't ever expect in pro sports anymore, it's a discount from a player because "he's made a great deal of money in his career already". I still expect a 37 year old to want market value or be prepared to move across the continent for it.

100%, in everything. And if there is a discount something is probably wrong. By the way....that Moose you sold me on a discount is all kinds of fckd up. It doesn't do shyt, just mooses about the yard and starts beef with the neighbours cat. Won't fetch, shake a hoof, nothing. It's disappointing.

The average salary of a cap team next year will be 4M with a full roster. Is Giroux that far below average ?

depends on what we could do with the money.

4m or even extra 1-2 mill is a significant amount to get a star or just even to get faster and stronger or fill out with quality depth.

the thing i noticed about Washington is that they had no players like Hamonic or
Giroux slowing the team.

its just 4 lines of relentless size and speed.

3 mill

It's still more than fair considering how he's playing not to mention he lacks a cup and should sacrifice a million for for a better chance at one.
3 million isn’t really fair for 50+ point player.

Edit: now I see you changed that to 2.5 million 😆. Zero chance 2.5 million

It's a sport moose not meant for yard grazing and neighbour mingling. Do more of this...

50 point player playing with a 90 point player though.

how much more deadly could we be if we replaced Giroux with Ehlers or something.

Ehlers-Stutzle-xx
Brady-Norris-Batherson
Greig-Pinto- xx

we'd rocket up the standings.

Lads remember, what Giroux should sign for isn't as important as what he will based on market value.

Yes he's declining, but even if he declined to a 40pt guy (which is unlikely, he'll still hit 50 pts) he's still going to be a faceoff beast and can play in every situation, not to mention his leadership.

What are his comparables in the market and are any of them below $4 million aav?
