He is still producing and likely will for a few more years. I hope we re-sign him when his deal is up and he retires a Senator, right after he wins a Cup in Ottawa.

He is a core piece for as long as he is here. His compete, his FO skills, his point production and his leadership are too valuable to lose.

Nobody is a core piece on a miserable team. Especially an older player with only a year left on his contract.

I agree he is a good player and leader by example. However you have to look at the circumstances.

The Sens have a GM who has no NHL experience, Staios. They have a team that is on the very bottom of the NHL. The Sens have no permanent coach and no coach so far has been able to help these players win.

The rebuild is far from over.

I'm just worried that adding one more veteran player isn't going to turn this team from a bottom feeder to a playoff team.

There are so many holes in this team. They need a good RH defenceman, to get rid of Korpisalo's contract and somehow find a good goalie.

Removing a player that you’re trying to get, will make it worse.

I might trade Giroux if we would get a top 2 OA draft pick back; however, I doubt Giroux would agree to it as he has an NMC and I doubt any team with a top 2 OA draft pick would make that trade.

We could only dream to have a vet come in who brings what he does. It's actually been astounding to see how he has sustained his game. His contract isn't bad at all, particularly with the cap rise next year and the buy-outs being over.

I get the concept and agree the rebuild isn't over but we are tweaking mode now and getting a late 1st for him won't move the needle for a long time.

I am a believer that the group of youngsters we have are capable of winning with the right structure, better goaltending and another top 4 on RD. Moving from G doesn't help any of those areas.

In the end, I would rather see a bunch of other players moved before him as I can see him being a great 3rd line guy even 2 years from now who gets put out win draws and is actually capable of scoring.

I got the sense that players were going to Giroux for leadership, as opposed to Brady, the captain. If that's the case, it's easy to see why there would be some issues between the two.

I can definitely see why there'd be some friction when you have a young captain and a star player who has previously been a captain and is a decade older.

Depending on how this season goes, I think 5m x 2yrs is right on the mark in terms of what the team would be willing to do and I think it is fair. If this season goes off the rails (again), then he might just want to go elsewhere to finish his career and try to get a Cup with a contender.

Can't speak to the speculation of a rift with Brady, but as others have mentioned, you could see it happening with him being a 36-year old veteran player and long-time captain, who is known for being open and vocal about how he feels and a 24-year old captain. Both of whom ate type-A personalities and both very much want to win and have had back-to-back very frustrating seasons with all kinds of on-ice and off-ice issues with this team and this organization. I would suspect that both players are very frustrated, and I would not be surprised one bit if they have butted heads.
It's certainly natural in the situation that they are in, and I would be more surprised that they haven't to be honest.

I do think that the addition of a couple of veterans, that are around 30y/o and have been around the league awhile, will help to bridge the gap and bring some new voices to the room and the bench because Giroux might just be feeling isolated on an island and out of place in a room/on a team with a bunch of guys in their early to mid-20's.

Ya agree he wasn’t good for those last 32 games. Brady was better under Jacques, Claude was worse.

His overall PPG dropped from .93 to .63 from for the second half of the season, was definitely a disappointment, but he was still effective on other ends of the ice. Was still a beast on the dot, still played on the PK (albeit less), etc.,

He's 36 though, his decline is going to happen eventually. Hoping it wasn't this past January.

remember how fiery he was last season and the beginning of this season? none of that in the second half of the season after we were eliminated. he definitely checked out, the kids and losing broke him.

imagine how he must feel not having a cup and wasting his final best chances with our core that doesn't take winning seriously. very good chance he leaves.

like the ONLY reason he hasn't already is because his family is there.

why did Brady play better when all the pressure was off and we were eliminated? he was a ghost when things actually mattered.

also Giroux definitely mailed it in the second half, probably the first time in his career that he has. you could tell his heart wasn't into it.
