That being said, sometimes you have to sacrifice value when you're desperate to address a specific need. Steve Staios crushed the Linus Ullmark trade because the Boston Bruins were desperate to clear salary and a roster space, in order to make several additions today. With the acquisition of Nick Jensen and a 2026 3rd-round pick from the Washington Capitals, Staios loses out on value because he was desperate for some adequacy on the right side of Ottawa's blueline, and couldn't acquire said adequacy without moving on from Chychrun.

But then we have to put up with another year of Chychrun, rather than trading him for a better and experienced player, with better positional and play style value for us.

Who is this experienced player with a better play style you talk about and when is he coming?

4 mill for a 34 year old 3rd pairing guy can’t be the one.

Zub is better and should be on the 2nd pair and this team clearly needs a RHD for the 1st pair, even a weak #2 RHD/strong #3 could have been slotted, but this is lame no matter what.

Jensen > Chychrun

Chychrun came to Ottawa with a big name and a lot of hype and was… well, he was bad.

Dorion did a far better job at recouping the assets in the DeBrincat trade.
LoL DORION DID THIS.

Don't like this one but let's get real other teams scouted Chych. They saw what we saw, tons of raw talent. No consistently or willingness to compete and battle. Bad body language.

All the talent in the world but unfortunately there's more than that. Too bad Dorion and Co didn't do any homework when scouting him in the first place.

This trades terrible though.

Sign Walker for 4 per year it's 2 million more than he would have made with Carolina. Trade Chychrun for whatever futures you can get.

Jensen is a 3rd pairing d man. Only a 3rd. Yikes.

Jensen is a solid 4 d man. Has been for a long time.

I would rather Jensen at his contract than walker at the contract he got (and we would have had to likely offer more)

Zub and Sanderson are a top pairing. There’s no”he should be second pair”. He works well with Sanderson AND chabot. And he works well playing against other teams top comp. sorry. That’s a top pairing d man.

These are the discussions tha lot happened after Demelo lol.

Oh yeah he plays well with chabot but he’s likely a 6-7 d man.

People need to recalibrate how they slot d men

Walker is 4 years younger a better player at a lower cap hit. Much prefer him he's very mobile.

If any team was interested in giving up Chychrun for futures, he would have been moved at the draft I would have to imagine.

It’s much more likely that whoever was taking him needed to send a contract out, and when we realized we weren’t hitting gold through UFA, which isn’t surprising, we added a guy who could play 19 a night on our 2nd pair who’s play style fits what we need there.

I do wish we got a higher pick, especially with them having 2 2nds next year, but their valuations likely met the thresholds for each team.

The Chychrun name was what was causing the prevailing though he had a lot of value, the player himself didn’t carry it.

Chychrun was a -30. Sure blame the goaltenders. But the goalies played in front of a piss poor defense aka Chychrun.

I was good with him staying but I really don’t mind seeing a change here, even at a sunk cost. Who cares.

This new defence should be able to cut down on low danger shots

And longer contract. More than double I think.

Is he mean and crease clearing? No. That’s what management wants. And what you want I thought?

Obviously it's not great. But Chychrun was not good for our team and he did not want to re-sign with us. There were some big name defensemen being traded along with some big name UFAs so Chychrun wasn't about to be that prized defenseman where we could get a great return.

We weren't in a good position with Cychrun. Thankfully with Arizona having moved to Utah we don't need to worry about overrating a player out in the desert, overpaying for him and having it be a disaster.

In terms of Jensen - as long as he's defensively sound I don't mind if he's a bit slower. Chabot is a skater. Sanderson is a skater. If Jensen can work with one or both it can be a solid pairing.

There are a lot of pairings in history where one skater is smooth and more offensively talented and the other is a big choppier but plays the defensive role. Kuba and Methot did this for Karlsson as an example.

Last year Washington had 5 D play over 1000 minutes at 5v5.
Jenson played the 3rd most all strengths minutes TOI/GP 19:37 and the most TOI/GP on the PK
Jenson had the lowest GA/60 ; 2nd lowest SCA/60 2nd lowest HDCA/60; Fewest Ozone Starts/60

His usage was primarily defensive and he faired pretty well.
He was also paired with Sandin. Both Chabot and Sanderson are way better players, so that should bode well for Jensen.

That's what the Sens need. Someone to take hard defensive zone minutes and PK. Hopefully he fits in and matches well with one of Sanderson or Chabot.

Best of a bad situation. The defense is more balanced, and roles will be more defined.

Last season roles never really seemed to be defined on defense, or forward for that matter.
