For the record, I expect 3/4 of Yotes fans to decline this. And I’m not sure I’d accept. I think Chychrun is worth more than this.
My thinking here is that if he must be dealt for some mysterious and stupid reason, and it can’t wait beyond this deadline, what might be a good fit?
Bill Armstrong and Doug Armstrong have a great relationship. Bill left the Blues just weeks before the Neighbours draft, and likely had a huge influence on the pick. He was also the top dog in the scouting department when Kostin was selected.
Meanwhile Scandella has made himself fairly expendable and is signed for two more seasons. Chychrun is a MAJOR upgrade, with only a minor bump in aav. Chychrun is the same age as Kyrou and Thomas and fits with that future core. Yet, he’s a major piece for right now that can help while the ROR, Tank, Saad, Krug, Faulk (all are 30 years old) window is open. It’s a rare opportunity for a team like STL to bolster both the present and the future in one move.
For Arizona, I’m looking at this from the perspective of a culture changing deal. Adding guys like Neighbors and Kostin, so AZ can focus more on pure skill at the draft table. They need roster players for next season, too. They’ve got nobody signed. Neighbours and Kostin are both NHL-ready for next season.
