Honestly, the Canes did MB a favor. KK was a long term project and was likely not going to pan out in the MTL system. But, MB couldn't very well give up on another 3 OA pick, now could he? Next year, it was very much an open question whether KK would be able to handle the 2C duties and MB probably wanted a solid vet like Dvorak to take that spot. Again though, will KK in the system and having been with the big club since day 1, it made that option difficult. The canes OS forced the issue. By offering KK something that is clearly above his current value, it gave MB the out he needed. Even better, the fanbase was clearly behind walking away from the OS, so, gave him even more cover to get out of the situation. My main concern this past week was, by being in the jam MB was, he would get fleeced trying to fill that C spot. I was worried he wouldn't do it, because it would be too expensive. He got it done though and at a reasonable price given the circumstances. The only asset MTL lost was KK who was losing his luster and MB got the solid 2/3 C he wanted. Now the team is better than last regular season and by PO time could be better than last PO team as well.
Now, the only negative that might come from all of this is KK turns into a solid C for the Canes in a couple of years. It's still going to be 2 years before that happens and it will cost them 12 M to get there. Even if that happens, there's really no guarantee it would have happened in MTL. My point is, even if he turns out great for the Canes, it doesn't mean he would have for MTL and it will be a costly process for the canes to get there.
Gotta hand it to MB, he stepped in sh*& and turned it into gold.
