Looks like it was a mixture of both in the 90's.

According to Eliteprospect, Frank Jay was the Director of Amateur Scouting in Quebec before PL took over. Then when PL came aboard in 94-95, Frank Jay left, and they didn't have anyone in this title. Same thing their first year in Colorado in 95-96. Draper was just a scout at this time.

Then in 96-97 Draper took over as Director of Scouting. Then two years later in 98-99 his title changed to Team Consultant so he may have just run draft day. For two years they went without a Director of Scouting title, then Draper moved on to be Director of Scouting for the Coyotes in 00-01.

Then Jim Hammett took over as Avs Director of Scouting in 00-01. I distinctly remember this was much more of a part time gig than a full time one for him, maybe similar to Draper just running draft day. I think this is how they preferred things around this time.

Brad Smith had moved from Scout to Director of Player Personnel in 05-06. Hammett left in 06-07. They went without a Director of Scouting for two years, but Brad Smith might have handled this role. Then in 08-09 Pracey was hired as Director of Scouting.

94-95 - Empty
95-96 - Empty
96-97 - Dave Draper
97-98 - Dave Draper
98-99 - Empty (Draper Team Consultant)

02-03 - Jim Hammett
03-04 - Jim Hammett
04-05 - Jim Hammett

06-07 - Empty (Brad Smith might have handled this role)
07-08 - Empty (Brad Smith might have handled this role)
08-09 - Rick Pracey
09-10 - Rick Pracey
10-11 - Rick Pracey
11-12 - Rick Pracey
12-13 - Rick Pracey
13-14 - Rick Pracey

Unacceptable to not have a head of scouting.

Does that explain why our amateur scouting is dog shit?

Not really. My theory is that the Avs were a ridiculously insular organization that just didn't do much to look outside the organization for new blood. In many ways they're still very much like that.

Doesn't explain why the pro scouts as so good though, but my theory on THAT is that analytics are far easier to find on pro players, and I'm not sure the amateur scouts pay any attention to advanced metrics, whereas the pro scouts very obviously do.

C-Mac gets kudos for bringing back LBN.

Plus a chance to attempt another reclamation project with Merkley, why not take a swing and see if he can find his NHL game, or not.

Savvy trade.

I like that this new era Avs front office with Joe and CMac values bringing back guys they know are good fits both on the ice and in the dressing room from their previous stints.

In past years they passed up on bringing back guys on the cheap or on waivers that could have helped them. Possibly just for prideful reasons.

Do you think they'd bring back ROR?

Yes and I actually think he might be the leading candidate. My guess is him or Toews, but we'll see.

Wouldn't be surprised if Nate's been pushing for it too. And we know Joe and CMac have listened to Nate's ideas in the past.

He'll be cheaper to re-sign too after his down season. Especially if they do it a couple games after the trade, but before the playoffs, where they can gauge how well he can keep up with their style of play, and won't have a good playoff run boost his value.

They could finally get him under the Duchene cap!

Even if ROR isn't as quick as he used to be, I think a line of Lando-ROR-Nuke could be really effective. Elite defensively and can definitely put the puck in the net.

I currently have him listed at 3. This offseason in hindsight was worse than I thought. Re-upping a lot of guys may have been a mistake in hindsight, not doing everything possible to address the 2C issue definitely was.
I think a lot of people are giving him credit for the cup run, and that's fine, so I can see four, but hell no on 5 since we're supposed to be grading him as GM not AGM and GM.

This TDL, and off-season we'll have enough to really grade him in this position alone. So 3 for now, can go either way real quick here though. Interesting reading the first couple pages of this thread though.

Well they brought back Foote, Tanguay, Yelle and Nemeth. None of which really worked out all that great. Only time will tell on LBNMN.

Had him at a 4, dropped this thumb-sitter to a 2. Call it recency bias, igdaf. Letting Kadri walk also looking worse by the day.

Alright if he's not trolling in the presser that should be it for the Avs.

I voted for 1. Fire him.

Yeah we can win the cup with who we have, but why not raise the odds by dealing some picks that won't matter for this core?

Maybe he's planning a summer move and kept the 1st because of that, but my man, you shoulda done that last summer. You can't just take a year off.
