I know he's the PF scoring type over playmaker, but this sort of gap is quite different from previous years.

Not having seen many Rangers games, I was curious whether he was simply getting to the net and finishing plays and little else. He's always been able to use his legs to make things happen.

He gets 85% of his production standing in from of the net, that's is bread and butter and probably the best in the league at it. So any team looking for a boost in their PP would want him. He's not going to create much at EV however, he's a below average passer and he's certainly not going to be dangling around making plays out there.

value is top $ demanded but that is Panarin at almost half

Rs are more likely to keep Kreider, who defies aging short term and may play in top condition another 3 or so yrs before graceful exit another 2-ish yrs after that, unlikely to overcharge Rs relative to his production

Rs not gonna offer anything near $ amount or term bread wants
Panarin smart enuf to see that and will waive before end of next yr

With him potentially on the trade block, make your offers. Rangers would prefer a youngish LD, but will entertain anything.

He has another 2 years after this season at 6.5M.

The thing with Kreider lately... he goes through a stretch like this almost every single season. I'm not really worried about him. He'll turn it around at some point.

The main reason his name got brought up is that he doesn't have an NMC. Unlike Trouba, who I think Drury would be ok trading for a small but decent return, it's going to take a hell of an offer to get Kreider IMO.

Why would they trade this guy

A few reasons:

1) Cuylle has emerged this season and is a viable replacement. Granted, having both is better, but Cuylle makes Kreider somewhat expendable.

2) Kreider and Mika aren't working well together at 5 on 5 and haven't been for a while. We've tried to split them up with mixed results, but the experiments never last long and Mika would be way harder to trade.

3) Kreider is going on 34 and, despite his production, he might have more value to the team as a trade chip to bring in some younger assets.

Both is crazy. I think the fact that Panarin still has 1 year left though is crazy value. He still is an elite 100+ point player. I think the Rangers need LHD more than a RHD right now.

If this was over the summer pre-draft, I'd modify to Silayev + two 2025 2nd. I would ask for the higher and lower ones (keep the middle). If this is during this season, I think we'd have to ask for more. If we are retaining salary (yes, the cap doesn't work for NJD ~$5M coming off cap next year but among like 4 players) the price probably goes up. I don't want to get into cap shenanigans like "do that Rangers take Palaj to make the cap work?" I'll leave that to the "pros"

How about Josh Anderson? Two big guys that might benefit from a fresh start. Two more years left each. Kreider is more talented, but also 3 years older.

Rangers would save 1M cap hit per year.

Habs looking for offense while Anderson is not penciled in their top 6.

I remember seeing a social media post that showed the goal scoring leaders from the past 3 years by regions in the o-zone. So Ovechkin was #1 from his office. Leon and Kucherov were #1 from the right side (can't remember who was high and who was low). Kreider is #1 from the front of the net. He's simply the best net front presence in the league in that time span. Masterful puck deflector. The fact that he is on pace for 41 goals and has zero assists is like really missing the point. If you put him on a line with McDavid or MacKinnon, he will passively accumulate a lot of assists. He has zero this season because of Mika. Full stop. He's an absolute demon on the PK and still skates faster than most players in the league.

I wasn't trying to imply that he was capable of dangling the puck. Merely that he has demonstrated the ability to lead a rush or keep up with one; that he wasn't simply a garbage man. And, I was trying to ascertain whether that was still the case.

Kreider is usually the player streaking up the ice who should be getting the pass from the transition QB. Again, Mika is the weak link. He's 9th from the bottom in +/- and leads the league (I believe) in games with a -4 rating (3 games). He has two games at -3. I've watched the games too. Mika frequently commits the turnover that turns into an opposition goal. Often in the neutral zone where he should be passing to Kreider to make the zone entry.

He’s movable and has positive value. Even his lack of assists this year can largely be attributed to the role he plays and the ineptitude of Zibanejad. Zib didn’t simply decline. He’s having a cataclysmic crash right now that is almost as incredible to behold in a bad way as Ovechkin’s start was in a good way. The same roster has been run back about 5x and they seem complacent and lethargic so a shakeup is needed. Kreider is a piece that can bring back value. That’s really it.

Putting tonight’s game aside, the Bruins need scoring, Boston fairly close to NY, but not the same division and Kreider has ties to it. Both teams are contenders still, so would need to be a hockey trade, what are the Rangers looking for?

Edit. I saw in the OP it was asking for a younger left defenseman. A lot of NTC and NMC clauses on both sides, but something around Kreider and Hampus Lindholm might help both sides. Probably too much to ask for Lindgren back for the age difference, unless we add someone else too. And of course Lindholm is on the IR, so it doesn’t matter anyway
