Speculation: Chris Johnston "An atom bomb could drop"

Are they supposed to be devastated they lost, and sit around for a month? It's hockey lol, they go out and live their life afterwards. Should we be ripping Nylander 3 days after getting eliminated he's playing for Sweden?

Some people care way to much about what athletes do and don't do.
Yes.

I didn't say sit around for a month. If "its hockey, lol" in the apparent context, then who gives a shit what happens in the least. MLSE shouldn't change a thing. In fact, MLSE should encourage the players to simply say, "It's hockey, lol...I'm going to live my life now." after every loss.

I find Nylander going to play for Sweden indicative of a player hungry to play hockey. And of our valued group he's the only one apparently, still hungry to play hockey.

There's obvious implications between the two camps. One went golfing, the other went to help is country compete in hockey. Hmm...

Some people don't care nearly enough about hockey. And for the money being made, and the money being spent, if its too much to ask that their privilege take a lap of shame for longer than 3 days while fluffing off their apathy in Bridal Path homes, then the sport in Toronto is definitively dead and what we're watching is only and intentionally entertainment.

Why? Because when everything is effortless, nothing is worth sacrificing for. And if they're not willing to sacrifice a thing, why on Earth would hard-working fans want one more thing to do with people who in effect scoff at the sacrifices being made to watch these players hold their paying public in contempt?

watch Nylander's interview form the year on how much it means to be a maple leaf and how Toronto is the only place worth winning a cup

Sure. We've heard it before from Nylander, which is nice - I'm still stuck on his comments about game 7. To be pulling that tagline this late into this project is irritating.

I mean the guy's entire persona is being cool, he's obviously pissed off he's alluded to it multiple times in the past. it was a crappy game and he just pointed that out.

So if Matthews is golfing does that mean his injury is not back or wrist related. He said it will heal itself. Could he be dealing with a sickness instead of a physical injury?
It’s kind of a sickness. My guess it’s between the ears or he simply doesn’t give a rats ass about the playoffs. He’’s been paid and that’s that

You can be devastated at losing a game and still go do something else you enjoy. If I have a bad day at work, i can still go the movies. In fact it might cheer me up to get my mind off the terrible day I had. Just because one wanted to play more hockey and one wanted to golf doesn't make either more or less correct than the other.

You're trying to find an implication for one that likely isn't there anyways. Short of public self flagellation, what can they do? Based on your take, they could spend their time fostering kittens and that would be the wrong response.

It's more a function of your take of my take rather than it being based on my take. But to this portion of your comment: "Short of self-flagellation, what can they do?"

Well, for one, they can take time before fulfilling fan prognostication that they have one eye on hockey and the other on tee time. That involves all manner of discrete - the dirty word it is - discrete past times that aren't on a golf course at a luxury club.

Fostering kittens, like other chartable engagements, isn't quiiiiiiite the same as golfing with your Maple Leafs pals now, is it?

As for finding an implication between one player wanting hockey vs others wanting to golf and one not being more or less correct. Well...In an untethered comparison I suppose there's some credence to that.

But our subjects are Toronto Maple Leafs, not Ontario Teachers Federation members. And the context isn't a typical citizen's work-a-day routine. What the context falls under, is that rarified commitment to excellence under a singular scrutiny not found in any other sport for any other team with respect to previous years of failure.

So, I think when the context is hockey players who have consistently been suspected of having a problem with full commitment to playoffs level hockey and who have been the punchline because of their suspected lack of focus and commitment to hockey...but not to golf when they should be playing hockey...the guy who has led that same group for five years come playoffs, and who turns around and says, I need to go "relax" by playing hockey for my country who is still competing...

...Like do we really need a map to understand the objective truth of the situation between the two groups in terms of commitment?

The truthful point is you shouldnt give a f*** what they do outside of the rink. I care about the effort they give on the ice and training for on the ice. Past that, if they want to golf, skydive, foster kittens, play in a world championship, set a world record for popcorn eating, i couldnt give two shits.

TBH looking into whether or not they're golfing instead of sitting in a priests box telling about how they sinned to us fans...its just weird.

For them to sit there and stew for multiple days after a loss is not healthy. And for us to care if they are golfing or not multiple days after a loss...is also not healthy. Its creepy and weird.

I think its a generational disconnect in several ways that's not worth my time to explain further. You're free to reach toward extreme examples I haven't made, but I think pushing back against the content of my opinion with abstraction, is weird.

Silly things like integrity aside, the picture isn't mine, but my opinion is. The context of posting the picture isn't in line with celebrating their effort, it's ridicule. That's a normal by-product of times like these.

So I'm not sure what "looking into whether they're golfing" etc, is supposed to frame, because social media has provided the information. No one's hired a detective agency.

By a "priests box" do you mean confessional? And I guess by extension, is this just a convenient way of distorting the spectrum of the comparison? Because if it is - and its what it looks like - well that's weird because its taking one person's opinion and furnishing it into something else, something you prefer were the case, because you can't (or won't) finesse the difference in fact from your preference in fantasy.

The "truthful point" is, if you're suspected of being compromised in dedication towards competing, then your behavior should probably reflect the opposite. In comparison to Nylander, the examples are plainly disjunct, and one - Nylander's - has preferable optics, whereas The Pulpit Club (or is that what you mean by "priests box" assuming its not something completely askew, lol), three days after is questionable optics.

Is the last sentence basic and sanitized and gentle enough for you not to have an existential crisis over this topic on a hockey chat board?
