Speculation: Chris Johnston "An atom bomb could drop"

After game 7, people on twitter posted his address and threatened to kill his newborn.

That's brutal.

I can't find it with a search, so it must have been cleaned up around the net?

I get that we're all pissed. Not only because they lost again, but how badly they lost and how bad they looked in that final game. However, blowing up the entire roster, trading everyone and hoping somehow that means we now win a cup is just not going to work.

Let's be real, Marner is gone. He's not going to sign a new contact with Toronto right now unless they pay him an insane amount of money, he has all the cards, he will be in very high demand come July 1st and it's too late to get anything back for him. The Leafs front office messed up in letting it get to this, but it did, and now it's done. Tavares, who knows, if he were willing to take 4.5-5M, I think it's worth thinking about given that you're already losing Marner and if you can avoid another gaping hole in the forwards line-up, do it. If he wants 7-8M, then let him walk.

The Leafs have come to this because of a series of bad decisions in the rush to rebuild. They had a sniff of the playoffs earlier than expected and suddenly believed they were farther along than they truly were, and tried to accelerate the rebuild. They can't make that same mistake again. Based on projections, the Leafs are going to have close to $27M in cap space for next season. Knies needs a new contract, so that'll take a chunk out of that but there's still going to be more space than they've ever had, they need to be smart about it and not just spend it all on UFAs.

They need another forward to take Marner/Tavares' places. What about Steven Stamkos? I know, I know, he and the Preds had a terrible season in which he looked like crap. I'm not saying trade the farm, but if Nashville was willing to retain 50%, he still got 53 points last season. At 4M x 3, that's not a terrible piece. So let's say you somehow acquire Stamkos, re-sign Tavares at 5M AAV and get Knives done at let's say 7M (I know that's a lot but if you can get him on 7Mx8, I would do it). So that's 16M which leaves 11M to acquire short term depth guys on 1-2 year deals.

The thing with the Leafs is they have been too top heavy. The teams that make the playoffs (especially in the Atlantic) are all good teams, and so they just know to shut down the Matthews-Marner line and they have a good shot at winning. The Leafs need to establish a more diverse offense. Think about this, the Panthers top scorer in the current playoffs is Eetu Luostarinen who earns just 3M a year. 8 players on their roster have scored 10 points or more in 13 games played. Sam Reinhart, Matthew Tkachuk and Alexander Barkov (who earn a combined 28M in cap space) have a combined 10 goals out of 50. In fact, Nylander would be the top scoring forward for the Panthers right now, Marner would be tied for 2nd and Matthews tied for 3rd despite the fact the Leafs scored just 36 goals in 13 games. I know these are just numbers but they show that the best teams get goals from more than just the top line.

Shanahan should absolutely be gone as he is the one constant that led to this. Lou is gone, Babcock is gone, Dubas is gone, Keefe is gone, so it's time for Shanahan to leave as well. Matthews and Nylander should stay, you just need to have some other weapons to make teams hesitant about putting all their eggs in defending the 1st line.

Probably one of the idiots that call him 'bitchy mitchy' .
Never understand why people are in such a hurry to prove how dumb they are.

Cowan should make the team and help next year. With 34 and 91 as your top 2Cs you are not beating the Panthers next year with this cast unless they fall complacent. This team needs to move off Marner and replace him with players can help them against the Panthers. Marner is not that guy.

How could any NHL team have interest in Brandan Shanahan after a decade if ineptitude and failure

Once your in NHL management/coaching your in for the long run unless you get blackballed for non-performance issues
Because the Islanders would be thrilled to make the playoffs every year.

We better have higher expectations than that.

Why do the Isles need permission to speak to him? His contract expires June 30th and they can talk to him all they want then. Unless they want him in place before the draft and/or free agency.
Because they are in the 2nd round of interviews with other GM's. They don't want to wait or waste the other candidates time. Best to just ask and do the interview now to see if he's a fit rather than waiting until the 30th.

That’s actually messed up.

People need to separate sports and real life. Outside of hockey I’m sure Marner is a good person and you can’t really hate him for anything he’s done off the ice.
Marner has been dealing with this his entire time in Toronto. I don't think he's coming back even if Toronto offered the league max.

But they aren't hiring him to be GM. The only reason is if they want him in place to have input on the GM.

You are correct, they do not. It's a reset year next year, it's about not wasting the cap space. The team isn't going to get magically better by losing Marner. But he is gone, and just going and trying to plug in the Marner hole with another 8 figure contract isn't the way to go.

I'm not a fan of ****heads that are supposed to be leaders of their team that lay eggs when the pressure comes.
at least they play in Toronto rather than being p***yes and f***ing off to florida after laying eggs in Calgary and then crying about pressure in Canadian markets. sounds like a real "playoff warrior"

I dont know I'm not a fan of p***yes who quit on their teams and run away from Canadian markets because of the pressure. its not like he elevates his scoring in the playoffs either.
Idk, Treliving is a failure and the writing is on the wall everywhere he goes. He ruined the flames and now he’s burning the leafs. That was a poor hire

I dont care for treiliving I am trying to dispel the fake narrative that people created of Tkachuk being some playoff warrior when he's just a baby back bitch who fled his Canadian team due to pressure

Folks talking about leaving the benches and going into the stands:
a question--who on the Leafs would actually worry you, in a scrap?
Reaves-when he's on the team and........?

I was being kind of facetious but I'm guessing most of those guys could handle themselves against the average fan. Especially the type of tough guy throwing a beer at the players on the bench.
