Speculation: Chris Johnston "An atom bomb could drop"

I don't think he did. Why would he bother doing that right after the NMC kicked in.
Maybe it's been a long day at work for me, but two summers ago Dubie was canned, NMC's were about kick in that summer, Shanny called the core four (thanks Shanny), then Tre was hired.

One year later, Shanny was effectively relieved (I speculate), Tre tried to position for a Marner move, but Ferris nixed it immediately.

No?

Ok fair enough. So Marner has been a hostile asset. When was he offered 13.5m?

Things were pretty mum on that front through the year, but I've never seen anything from the front office to indicate that an offer was made.

Just tried to move him twice.

Never really said anything else about it other than a few pleasantries post tdl, after the Ranta fiasco, when nothing further could be done, and the team was going into playoffs mode.

Bunch of insiders said all kinds of shit though.

My buddy had floated the idea of trading Matthews for Byfield and Clarke out of LA. Gives you 2 possible emerging players for cheap and developing Clarke could allow you to move on from Rielly. Honestly wouldn't be the worst trade, if we moved on from Auston.

Or maybe to a team like the wild. They are a team that could use more offense and a guy to play with Kaprizov. Something like Buium and Ohgren plus.

i like that phrasing, though hostile night be to strong. He has been a difficult one for sure.

When people say Marner has to go, do they think this is the case at any cost? Meaning if he was willing to sign an eight year, $88.16M deal. Would anyone here change the their mind?

I think he has to go but I also think the only way he could stay was on a good contract where the fans appreciate a hometown star, taking the discount so we can add. I don't think he does this but does anyone have a number you WOULD keep him?

Worst time possible for a tank job without your own picks.......
No picks. Any cap space is irrelevant because the 2 biggest UFAs are the players we are walking away from.
Any players of value besides Knies (who shouldn’t be available) have trade protection.
Multiple Dmen signed into their late 30s so even if they are good now their deals likely won’t age well.

Yeah things are definitely looking great moving forward…..

Chris Johnson has zero insider information which is obvious anytime you hear him on a presser.

I could see him back channeling with a low level guy and they would give off the vibes like yeah we talk about some things... Real Kyper said the other day before Game 6 that they had at least spitballed "what if" with Auston.

Id.be just fine if they decided to rebuild.the entire front office. Would be okay Maybe holding onto Pridham, and the new head of scouting hasn't had a chance yet to make their mark. But they need to purge most of Shanny's fingerprints from this team.

With no 1sts until 2028, they're not going to decimate the roster - so don't expect that. But don't blink if Marner and JT end up walking + a revamp of a fair amount of the forwards and maybe an attempt to ask Reilly to waive

Asking Rielly to waive has to be a priority. For sure he's here with the long term security and likes his lifestyle but those aren't good reasons to keep someone.

I'd do it. No idea what LA does but Matthews is damaged goods and soon other teams will know what we already do.

Wild could definitely use Matthews but I don't think he waives his NMC to go to Minnesota.

I feel like within a year Mo is going to be buyout/LTIR material tbh. Not sure I'd go down the buyout road yet but he's falling off at a TJ Brodie-like rate.

I cannot imagine anyone trading for him unless we can bribe Vancouver to do it.

To me, he looks like a guy who is grossly out of shape to play his position.

He's 225 pounds which is about top 3 in weight among Toronto Maple Leafs, is sluggish at everything he does, gets winded on any kind of puck battle in the Leaf end, and he doesn't clear out the net front or win puck battles, or seal off walls or outmuscle people.

I dunno if you can LTIR a guy for just being out of shape but that's the main problem I see with him.

I'm out of shape, sluggish and get winded easily, can I get a buyout too

Another option is Anaheim. Them having Matthews could help quicken their rise in the ranks with Auston as 1C and Leo Carlsson as one heck of a 1-2 punch. Maybe something like Mactavish and Senneke. Gives ya two good size, gritty forwards with skill to help rebuild around. A potential top 6-9 with those 2, Knies and Cowan would play with balls in a few years
