CHL Can Now Play NCAA - Changes Everything

There are ways around.

Like the AHL won't allow players of certain age to join. So instead they have to either stick with the NHL or go back to juniors.

There are absolutely no ways around child labor laws. Any contract that forces a minor to play exclusively in any league is 100% illegal.

Anything regarding the NHL/AHL is immaterial, professional leagues don't sign minors in North America.

Enforceable to have break fees (you choose to leave early, you have to repay some expenses we covered) like with NTDP.

That also has to do with NTDP (USA Hockey) being a 501(c)(3), aka non-profit.

I'm not 100% positive but I don't think a CHL team could similarly force (in a contract) a player to reimburse them in the event a player leaves. The CHL are for-profit entities.
CHL owners are making money off the backs of these kids who are getting paid a relative pittance.

There is no "force". The prospect can quit hockey... without ramification.

The sole purpose behind what I said was to prevent the NCAA from poaching Keaton Verhoeff age prospects.

Throw out my idea then. The CHL and NCAA should try to iron out the process.

Chicago Steel are having an interesting off season. Brought in Scott Gomez as coach and then immediately lose Croskery. Valentini seems to be signing with Kitchener later this afternoon. Hage is not on their camp roster. Assumed he's headed to the Petes. Q draft is tomorrow. Will be interesting to see where Scantlebury goes.

No, there are no legal workarounds to barring minors and juniors from going to school and leaving a place theyre barely compensated on working for. Good luck trying to fight that in federal court if youre the CHL.

And potentially Sisson if he doesn't play NCAA next year.

Yeah. Sounds like there isn't.

At the end of the day, potentially diluting the skill level at the CHL level... also indirectly hurts the NCAA imo.

After 2 full seasons at the CHL, its a good stepping stone for prospects like Reschny (not much more to prove at the CHL level). Not sure about younger prospects like Verhoeff jumping ship early.

Time will tell how it all plays out, the CHL takes a hit for sure. Doubt it takes a hit severely to the degree some posters in here say it will or want it to be. Player movement and strength around the leagues will even out at some point but for the most part, the CHL monopoly days over junior hockey and amateur development are over and the league and its owners, management, recruiters/scouts, coaches, etc. will have to adapt and get used to the new rules.

The CHL leagues already went through this with the IHL and WHA taking players from them in the 70s-90s and survived from then till now. Banning kids from going to school for a certain time to force them to stay will certainly not help in that regard tho.

Are you under the impression that CHL owners are pocketing a ton of cash from their teams? London Knights, sure. Most of the others, nope.
Yeah pretty shakey logic to go on when all these players are going to an upstanding organization with no faults in the NCAA! They have never taken advantage or profitered off amateur athletes ever!

D1 coaches are going to do what they feel they need to do to win now; that's what they get paid to do. They're not worried about the wider/longer view; that's for other people to work out.

The three guys that come to my mind who went to D1 as true 17YO's are Werenski, Wood and Celebrini. They all did very well as freshmen. No reason why Verhoeff won't do well, too.

Back in 2013, 10 players on the USA U20 roster played in a CHL league (or in the case of JT Miller was an active AHL player that had come directly from a CHL league)

By 2028, will there even be 10 active CHL players on the Canada U20 roster?

Rapidly changing times.

You know how the CHL can prevent the NCAA from poaching Keaton Verhoeff age prospects? Offer them better facilities, resources, level of play, compensation, etc.

Keep in mind, the CHL was poaching NCAA players for years. What, the CHL deserves special treatment now that CHLers can go the NCAA route?

Croskery was flat out bad in Chicago and looks dramatically overrated on a scouting level - he’s supposedly the top 2008 Canada dmen is just ridiculous . Valentini is really good player but he’s barely 5’9 so not sure his upside . Lindberg- ntdp , number three pick in ushl draft to steel looks like he forced a trade out of Chicago and will head to Fargo . Chicago looks like a dumpster fire and they are bringing in a new coach but the head scout they retained in which I don’t recall anybody ever doing a worse job ! Hearing 2-3 high end Steel players are leaving too - not good day for USHL lol. However , with Steel moving to the Blackhawks practice facility next year with millions of $ spend on upgrading it with beautiful new rink - training facility should be the future of the USHL - need to partner with NHL teams - upgrade facilities and owners . Great news there .

Like who? I know Warren Foegele is the lone one to come to the fronts because he was struggling in the NCAA.

All works out in the end though now as the CHL will be getting lots of the top tier USHL/BCHL/NAHL/OJHL prospects. So while the 19/20 year old group who are soon to age out anyways get weaker- the 16/17/18 year olds get a lot stronger and can stay for longer playing better competition. Seems to me some USHL teams want to become apart of the CHL because they recognize this too.

Seems to me the CHL isn’t doing too bad themselves. The top Canadians and likely some Americans will now come here in their dy-2, dy-1 and dy. So less top tier guys like the Hughes’, Fantilli, Celebrini, hutson’s to USHL Makar going AJHL etc and instead they’ll come to the CHL. Not everyone but some of them where as before if they wanted to go to college they never had the CHL option
