CHL Can Now Play NCAA - Changes Everything

What on earth are you talking about?

Literally nobody ever has said that no players will move to the NCAA.

The NCAA homers were predicting a massive influx of high-profile players to the NCAA when the CHL season ended (like, 50+ players) and literally 1 guy has announced a commitment since his season ended, and that guy has been widely known for months.
Huh, now you're just in basic denial mode. People were literally speculating that players were going to stop going to the NTDP in favor of the CHL, that they'd have to drop down to 1 combined team for both age groups. Surprise surprise, NTDP got everyone it wanted (if maybe they lost a kid or two that wouldn't be anything new either, historically speaking).

No, it was not known the day that CHL players were declared eligible for the NCAA that Cayden Lindstrom and Henry Mews would spend 2025-26 in the NCAA. We'll see how many players make a move next year once everything is sorted out and everyone knows what the rules are on all of this stuff. I don't know if there are barely even 50 unsigned teenagers (2006 born or later) in the CHL good enough to play in the NCAA next year as is, so yeah I'm certainly not anticipating that many (especially as most recruiting classes are already full so you'd really only make an exception for a special talent). It's obvious the goal posts have shifted tremendously already and will likely continue to shift because people are too stubborn to admit they maybe didn't have their pulse completely on things like they'd like to believe.

I do find it interesting the NCAA guy's talking about CHL people being cocky about it....while getting cocky about CHL players leaving to go to NCAA lol. End of the day both places will end up fine, but there will be a lot more movement in both directions then in the past. I still have my doubts over the elite drafted talent making the switch but we shall see. I do think this all could be an overall positive for Canadian player development even if it is a big change for the CHL as an entity.

I get that Michigan will have a massive advantage with attracting talent (national brand, galaxy size sports programs, in OHL backyard etc etc). Find it a bit weird haven't heard the same type of rumors with other hockey blue bloods. There was some stuff with the Boston schools months ago but it's been quiet there since then. Is Michigan going to have a monopoly on the big names?

Having more options is (typically) good for everyone involved. Kids that want to play college aren't forced into the Chase Reid scenario where a USHL team won't give them ice time when they're good enough. 19 year old tweeners aren't forced to a 4th year in the same league that they already conquered, etc. Only losers in it are the fringe players presently that will be pushed out (think the Don Cherry argument against the Import Draft), but that's life.

Not long term. There's only so much ice time available.

MSU has the biggest name so far...

IMO it's the two Boston schools and the two Michigan schools. Then a gap but PSU might be closing up in 5th. It won't be a UM monopoly.

Michigan is well situated for Ontario kids based on their location and I guess prestige. Kinda always been that way. As years go by and it becomes normal to see high profile CHL -> NCAA guys, I imagine all the big names will pick up their fair share here and there.

I believe he was referring to me and you are correct, I never ever said that no underage CHL player would play NCAA. What was said by some was that this rule change was gong to have a minimal impact on the USHL while making the NCAA the top of the academic pyramid. I said don't count on it because there was going to be massive changes on the way and that the CHL did not want to become a feeder to the NCAA like the USHL.

Let's see how many top flight CHL underagers are gracing college rinks next year. Then lets see how many more Americans are in the CHL next season and the season after that.

Then we'll see whose beating their chest.

no they'd just allow players to start the year in the AHL but have to be returned to the CHL or be called up to the NHL by a certain date(have heard December 1st)

I've heard mid February as the cutoff, if not returned back to the CHL then a year of their contract burns off

What is an underager, not drafted/eligible yet?
I assume NCAA is mostly 19+, with a few 18 year olds.

Will the changes take effect this coming season? The existing agreement doesn't expire until 2029 but it wouldn't seem to make much sense to leave things as they are for four more years, given the change in the NCAA-CHL situation.

Not sure but chatter is increasing that changes will happen sooner than later

I saw UML nabbed two CHL, NHL draft picks in Misskey and Mathurin (although Detroit let go of Mathurin’s rights). Misskey in particular seems a bit of a coup, looks like he had a pretty good 19 year-old season in the WHL with elite size and solid skating and two-way play. This seems a pretty solid route for a guy like him he maybe gets lost in the shuffle of the Sharks prospect pool a bit as they flood their farm team in the AHL with picks but is maybe too good to be a CHL overager.

Thoughts, @Hockeyville USA ?

Haven't done a deep dive on Misskey, but that's a good pickup for UMass Lowell. Mathurin didn't take the next step in junior, hence why Detroit didn't sign him, but he has/had very good skating that creates some mismatches.

Misskey is a very good pick up for UML, a home run so to speak as that program isn't known for picking up high end recruits. Misskey will do well there and UML will be glad to have him. He has size, is athletic and will be able to run their PP. Still has a pro future. Mathurin can play a good physical game but IQ is questionable . He does have a decent shot and some offensive upside.

Michigan is a loudmouth program driven by ego with a coach who has similar qualities. If they leak the big names as being interested in scUM, then it gives off the impression you have interpreted.

Who are you a fan of? What's your issue with Naurato other than him being open and honest about what his program has to offer?

Lol MSU if you couldn't tell. Naruato is a massive dbag. Just watch how he acts during games. Also know firsthand from people he has recruited. Michigan does not care about development whatsoever, just draft position. If you were a 3rd rounder and they can replace you with a second-round guy just for appeal, they will. Look at what happened to Humphreys, a week later they bring Horcoff in and he burns a whole year of eligibility for 1/3 of the season. Just stupidly short sighted
