bchl is still lot better league than nahl - chl not calling up any nahl kids lol . bchl to remain relevant just needs to get younger and be a feeder for the CHL — nothing wrong with that because nahl has made itself irrelevant in the USAThe BCHL put this up on their website late Friday.

Saying that less than 4% of the players have left is an interesting framing. That’s a player on average from each team. No, it doesn’t debilitate the league, but it’s a bright red flashing light that tells the players there’s an off-ramp.
They say they’re committed to eliminating player fees next year, which will surely attract some players. I wonder if some of the clubs that don’t draw well will be able to afford that.
The player pool for whom it makes sense to choose the BCHL above other leagues has been impacted and they are eliminating a stream of revenue to find them. Defensive statements (aimed at who exactly?) don’t instill a ton of confidence in potential recruits.
NOT irrelevant to the many players who gain scholarships to U.S. colleges. Are they going to put teams in cities that have USHL teams or try to pull in already existing USHL teams? The impression I got from his statement was that SOME people want more than 2 right away. The plan might be for 4 down the road but will probably start with 2. Muskegon, Youngstown now. Toronto and Belleville would be a good 5 year goal to get to 24.
Also yes I know Toronto is a stupid idea but the commish has said himself he wants a team there.
Yeah. Penticton is close enough to Kelowna that such a move would cost the Rockets from a public/media standpoint and from a corporate partnership standpoint. Their owner just happens to be the chair of the WHL board, so if they raise objections, it’s a good bet the move doesn’t happen. But there is a lot of antipathy between the two leagues and you could see the WHL swallowing Penticton just out of spite. Some chatter about Penticton (BCHL Flagship franchise) being accepted into the Dub. We'll see.
agree - i think nahl will be basically turn into NCDC . My view u-18 in usa will become more irrelevant . If nahl was smart they would put in age limit of 5 20 year old and a minimum of 4 rookie or age 17 kids to diversify their rosters . If Nahl remains sn old league - div 3 feeder they will have zero div 1 commits in 2 years . Their is not one kid whose dream is to play div 3. Every kid wants a shot at Div 1 and div 3 is a default . Div 3 is great hockey but thats a reality .Some chatter about Penticton (BCHL Flagship franchise) being accepted into the Dub. We'll see.
The NAHL is as relevant as the BCHL currently is to NCAA hockey but yes, most Canadian junior leagues will become feeders to the CHL and to U-Sports while the NAHL most likely will become the dominant feeder to D-III hockey (and still be very relevant btw!).
They are going to take them from the USHL. Those teams already came to the OHL asking to join. Are they going to put teams in cities that have USHL teams or try to pull in already existing USHL teams?
How would any of that work? Sounds lawsuit-ey.
Yeah, that'll be interesting then to see how all of that unfolds. They are going to take them from the USHL. Those teams already came to the OHL asking to join.
Am I missing something? It sounds like a couple of USHL teams want to leave that league and join the OHL. How can the USHL sue to prevent that, unless the league has some contractual control over the franchise or the venue? The USHL isn't their minor league that they can push around and dictate to. If they try to take their teams, they'll probably get sued
We'll find out about all of that, but it seems very dubious to me. Why hasn't it ever happened before?Am I missing something? It sounds to me like the OHL is trying to drum up fear-mongering against the USHL. They haven't succeeded in taking any of the players they wanted yet (especially any of the American players), so start unsettling USHL players about their future by suggesting that they're gonna come into the USA with a bulldozer and knock over a peer league.
All of this could be made up or whatever but this is what we’re talking about. The OHL is (likely) not coming into the USA with a bulldozer to knock over a peer league. USHL teams seem to want to bolt.

You are severely over estimating how much push back there will/can be for this.Yeah, that'll be interesting then to see how all of that unfolds.
Don't think it'll work that easy. The USHL isn't their minor league that they can push around and dictate to. If they try to take their teams, they'll probably get sued. There will also be questions about contracts for staff, players, etc, and which league controls the franchise property. Sounds like a potential PGA Tour-LIV situation. Don't believe we've ever seen something like this in junior hockey. Will the NHL take sides if two of their affiliates go to battle?
Call me skeptical they're just taking gonna take USHL teams. I think they might try to expand into the USA in some areas there aren't USHL teams. That's the most realistic option that isn't completely nuclear, but maybe they'll go nuclear and we'll get a lot of fireworks. The immediate plans to expand into the USA seems interesting timing.
The notable USHL players can’t move yet because the league is holding them for ransom. Wait til this summer when all transfers have standard fees instead of negotiated prices.Jeff Marek is close with OHL teams. That's what I'm saying. There was someone like a week and a half ago that tweeted that a prominent USHL player was about to leave to the OHL (this was right after the college hockey news), and it was shot down pretty much immediately by someone else. Just seems like the OHL is obviously trying to unsettle USHL players.
There've been a lot of junior A players in Canada leaving to the CHL leagues (and a few USHL players), but none of the USHL's players of note have yet jumped. It seems to me like some of these reports (inaccurate reports claiming players are about to jump or claiming that the OHL is about to gobble up USHL teams) is an attempt to unsettle the best USHL prospects into jumping.
From my understanding:We'll find out about all of that, but it seems very dubious to me. Why hasn't it ever happened before?

Like I said I wouldn’t put it past them. If I were the WHL I’d make that known as soon as possible, just to make the BCHL lose their minds. From what I heard, Kelowna signed off on it....but who knows, the source received that information from someone loosely associated with the league.
So you're suggesting they just give away some low level players for free? Why not also hold them for ransom (or at least something of value)? The notable USHL players can’t move yet because the league is holding them for ransom. Wait til this summer when all transfers have standard fees instead of negotiated prices.
They aren’t leaving for free. Low level guys are getting released for 10-15k. Some asking prices are 50k and up. Most teams will just wait until the off-season when release fees are standardized. So you're suggesting they just give away some low level players for free? Okay, but the claim is that they can't get the good players now because "they are being held ransom" or something like that. I don't know why any league (and specifically a team within the league that actually can utilize these players, regardless of whether they end up NHL players or not) would voluntarily give up their players for nominal compensation. They aren’t leaving for free.
