CHL can now play NCAA - change everything !

Can the CHL scholarship program be applied to American schools? Or is it limited to only Canadian schools?

If it applies to American schools it would sway a kid who may only get a 2 for 4 scholarship from NCAA, or may even help a kid go play for a D3 school since no athletic scholarships are given at that level.

Each CHL league will have to decide if it applies. It looks like the QMJHL was opened to it.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see BCHL top scorer Jeremy Loranger end up in Shawinigan by the end of 2024. He comes from Trois-Rivières which is a 30 minutes drive from Shawinigan.

He was actually drafted by Shawinigan, so they own his rights. It wouldn't be a surprise,

The trickle-down effect is liable to the Vancouver Island Junior B League too. They affiliated with the BCHL so the BCHL will be bringing players up to replace who they’re losing but where does the VIJHL get replacements from?

Really, at that low level who cares?

Ive always liked the idea of having to choose a route to go. The only thing I wish they would have changed is allowing those kids that signed with a CHL team at 14/15 years old that played a very limited amount of CHL games to change their mind when they are older.

I know of so many young players over the years that signed at 15 in the WHL and played some exhibition games and 5-10 regular season games and screwed themselves when they got older for NCAA.

So something like if a player signed at 14/15 years old and played under 10 CHL games, they are still eligible to play NCAA.

Thats just me though

How many guys who aren't good enough to crack a CHL roster to the point of playing under 10 games over 4 years are even going to be of consideration to NCAA teams? Can't imagine it's many.

Unless they go to the USHL/BCHL (or even NAHL) and tear it up. But with the new rules allowing CHLers in, fewer Junior A guys who can't make CHL lineups will get NCAA offers. There will still be some, but not as many for the dozens of mediocre producers.

Very interested to know how many 2007s and 2008s in the CHL have "silent commitments" to NCAA programs, or if they're taking their time, gauging interest from various programs.

Dominoes will fall even further once bigger names start committing.

Most Quebecers are fluent in both English and French.

In my experience, I would change most to many, and fluent to functionally bilingual. Once you leave the Montreal and Gatineau urban areas, finding bilingual Quebeckers becomes difficult.

Would not surprise me. I know of one high end 08 prospect that was set to leave but his USHL team demanded a 50k transfer fee. Perhaps some CHL teams are willing to pony up so the fees are increasing accordingly.

Might as well merge the CHL with the USHL or have the USHL and NAHL merge and become their own junior league.

Only a handful of USHL teams have the financial ability to absorb the higher costs of running a CHL franchise so do not expect a merger.

Do all of the Junior A leagues in Canada have to downsize/merge somewhat and just become mostly a USports feeder? Or do they become the new Junior B and just serve as feeder affiliates for CHL or even USHL teams who need spots to place their prospects/young players?

He can't name the players yet so he didn't name the teams. There are things to be finalize, maybe because the players's rights are owned by other QMJHL teams.

The BCHL is royally screwed. As for the others, they will survive, they're are only so many roster spots open on CHL teams and with more Americans coming over, those extra Canadians will have to play somewhere. The quality will go down, but they will still exist.

Ever since the Chicago Steel became a known power, the USHL started get most of the top end NCAA route Canadians.

A decade ago, Thomas Vandenberg never considers tendering with the Cedar Rapids Roughriders, probably goes to the BCHL or even just spends time in the OJHL or CCHL, but he did that this past year and is playing in the USHL as a 16 year old.

The BCHL left Hockey Canada specifically to be able to poach players from all over the country. With the NCAA announcement, all of those players suddenly became CHL eligible. Because they severed from Hockey Canada, they have no rights to compensation or protection unlike every other league in North America.
