Perhaps the Hawks like Soderstrom and Raty?

Looks like Soderstrom has 36 points in 47 games as a defenseman in the SHL

They must see something in Soderstrom and Raty that we don’t. Teams normally pay to dump a LTIR contract so let’s pretend it has negative value, even though Chicago probably needs it to hit the floor next year. Net zero value at best then probably. So they pay us a marginal draft pick. I guess from their perspective there’s not really a difference between gambling on Soderstrom or Raty turning into anything and gambling on whether a fifth round pick turns into anything worthwhile.

It’s not a big deal, but it’s kinda ridiculous how Weber was eligible for the HOF while still having an active contract. It’s a joke. Just seems a bit wonky.
It's not as bad as Chris Pronger working for the NHL's Player Safety Division (which hands out suspensions) while still technically under contract with a team.

They might've been scouting Svrcek and liked what they saw of Soderstrom. I could see him in the mix for next year.

With his experience Weber is a solid pickup for Chicago. He will be great for the youngsters in the locker room. Oh. Wait....................

I always wonder how much this affects his taxes?

Like for active players, (afaik) they get taxed on where each game is played. On LTIR he's paid by insurance, so is it still based on location? And if so his accountant must be so annoyed by this every year.

Probably gets taxed based on where his legal residence is at this point. I think, but am not sure, that the same applies to signing bonuses. That would explain why, say, Auston Matthews lives in Arizona in the off-season and his annual compensation is heavy on signing bonuses instead of actual salary.

I’m just half guessing though. I do not envy accountants who have to deal with the taxes of professional athletes.

Are these prospects going to Chicago worth much?

I wouldn’t say so. Soderstrom is a former Coyotes pick who struggled to stick in the lineup. Heard he’s having a great season in the SHL though. Raty I don’t know much about. He had a single game for the Coyotes last season but either I missed the game or don’t remember how he did. He was struggling in Tucson this season, just based on his stats (not that I’ve watched any Roadrunners games, so there could be more to the story but I doubt it). Neither were likely to ever play in the NHL for us again.

Yeah that makes sense on signing bonus. I did some digging and it does appear on cursory glance that LTIR players are still paid based on where the team they're technically on plays.

Funny enough, Shea's contract was almost all signing bonuses from 2012-2018. After which is just straight salary of 6,6,6,6,3,1,1,1.

Looking at all the tax rates though the biggest blow was going Nashville to Montreal, any trade after that has been (at the least) better than MTL, at least when accounting for home games.

Salary is only a million so not very much.

Edit: I guess it was the big picture you were after and you already answered yourself.
