Nashville has a lot of retained $ and dead cap next season and might need retention on Marner.

To Nash: Mitch Marner (@5.9 mill and then extended)
To Tor: Seth Jones (9Mill) and Nash 4th round round pick
To Chi: Nash 1st, Tampa 2nd (from Nash)

Chi retains $5 mill on Marner and $500k on Jones

Tor gets a #1RD, 4 time all-star, and a guy who plays the 5th most minutes in the NHL....also finally plays on a good team with a good top pairing D.
Nash gets All-Star Mitch Marner for the long term and cap flexibility for next season to make another run at the playoffs
Chi continues to build up the prospects and assets and would have picks number #2, #18, #22, in the first round and #34, #50 and #53 in the 2nd round

I feel like CHI moving out Jones and not getting a RD back isn't ideal, unless they're targetting Pesce or DeMelo or Walker or Roy in free agency. Toronto is probably looking to move Liljegren, so maybe that could be part of it. Just a thought, IDK.

There is way too little coming back to Chicago. Retention isn't cheap and as far as I can tell, CHI is basically being compensated for retaining while giving away Jones for free? The guy is overpaid -- slightly, by about 1.5M -- but he's still a top-pairing D and he's a RHD at that. And if there's one team that doesn't care about his contract right now, it's Chicago. They aren't pressed to move him at all.

Meanwhile Nashville makes out like bandits here. They get Marner at huge discount this year, he extends and all they give up is a mid-late 1st, a 2nd and a 4th?

Seth Jones isn't a cap dump. Chicago isn't trying to contend, isn't up against the cap, isn't desperately trying to shed salary during its rebuild. They've spoken of wanting him as one of the veterans to shepherd in the youth during this youth movement. For them, the money isn't an anchor on what they are trying to do.

Unless he comes out and makes it clear he wants out and would rather join a contender, Chicago is probably not looking for a new home for him (and maybe not even then).

Liljegren is a bad 2nd pair, average 3rd pairing guy. Doesn’t really move the needle.

That's bad for Chicago. They don't have to move Jones at all unless it's for good pieces. The retention on those contracts alone is worth those picks, Jones won't just be shipped off for free.

So what would be a fair return for Chicago? 1st, 2nd, and.......

Nashville has the draft capital and maybe a good young player like Evangelist.

Why in the hell would Toronto do this. We want cap space and young good players

Unless is sent to, Chicago, they retain on him, and then send him to Nashville this doesn't work.

It make no sense for Toronto is retain that much on Marner

No he’s not. With cap increase projections he’s overpaid today, by year 3 the contract will be in line. By year 5 or 6 most top pair guys will make more.
Ya and Tavares will be worth 11M in year 3 too. oh wait

Thanks for comparing similar players who play the same position using similar styles of play.

Look at bigger top pairing Dmen.
Who can hit but don’t make a living delivering big hits.
Who play sound defensively based more on positioning than speed.
Who can add to a decent offense and carry the puck well but isn’t a guy who dangles.

There are many, two everyone knows are Pronger and Doughty.
(Compare used for style of play only)
Jones’s game will age fine.

At risk of sounding like a Leafs homer, I would think a lot of teams can and would beat 22OA and 53 OA for Marner at 5.9M. Also - Chicago wasting a retention slot on 0.5M for 6 years is the type of bad business only Nashville would do (Ekholm). They could sell a retention slot for a 3rd at the deadline every year instead of 6 years for what appears to be no compensation.

Bad deal for the leafs

No interest in Seth Jones at 9.8M

Seems marner is drawing interest per reports. If thats the case and he is willing to waive his NMC then a deal like this wont ever be considered

This is a deal if Chicago is only team offering anything and marner only wants to go to chicago

I don't even know to be honest with you. The fact that CHI is retaining that much on Marner for the whole year and using a retention spot on Jones for the next six years is alone going to be expensive, without factoring in the fact that Jones is a very good player and would -- especially with retention -- get a ton of value back for 6 years left.

Toronto has desperately needed a top-pairing RHD for the entire Matthews era. Jones would be the perfect partner for Reilly. How much is that worth? Ask the Leaf fans in this thread, and apparently not much.

Marner is a greentoothed plague , please keep him away from Blackhawks kids. He can only teach them how to be greedy and probably golf since he rarely has seen a playoff game . Maple leafs are dreaming if they think they will get any kind of a return , since he has a no move and is a ufa .

Leafs should focus on trying to get out from Marner’s contract and not bring back money. Use cleared cap to sign free agents. Bringing back Jones seems like what Treliving did in the Tkatchuk deal.

From the Nashville perspective... we get Marner for a late 1st + 2nd + 4th? Sold.

Wait, we also got retention on his salary??? (Which we don't even need). Where do I sign????
