Yes. Get Hall off this team and make space for an up and coming prospect. Couldn't care less about the pick. The pick is frosting on the cake
I have more of an issue with losing a retention spot. You never know what'll happen between now and the deadline and it feels like Davidson might've handcuffed himself by making this trade for a measly 3rd.

I agree.

Why the rush? Just to do a favor for Colorado? I sure hope not.

All it does is give him less flexibility to make moves at the deadline.

It'd be one thing to do Colorado a favor if they're doing us the favor of taking Jones.

If they aren't, I'm not a fan of the move. Would be better to wait to the deadline and see who on this team (with a contract expiring this year or next) we could get value for with retention.

What if we don't trade Jones, but teams come calling about Murphy and Dickinson, willing to trade solid assets for them if we retain? Trading Hall for a 3rd now would prevent us from making both deals.

It's just about having options. We have less options after retaining on Rants.

And let's be honest, a 3rd round pick in a weak draft isn't something worth rushing to acquire.

Maybe if they waited till the deadline, they'd only get a 4th for Hall. But again, so what?

For the exact reason you gave, you're better off having two retention slots open rather than one.

I'd be shocked if by the time the draft comes around there aren't prospects available at this spot we're excited about.

Every year there is talk of it being a strong/weak draft and every year I find myself getting just as excited about these 2-4 rd picks.

Like if this pick turns into a Cullen Potter I see that as a big win, not that I don't already. As others have said I like opening a spot for a kid and just getting Hall of the team in general.

Even in bad draft years there are a bunch of guys who contribute from the mid to late in the draft. More picks give you more chances to find those guys.

Just IMO, why not now? Cane's and Avs were making that deal with the Hawks involved or not. Doing this deal avoids the chance of Hall getting injured, and IMO maximizes the return for the one retention slot used in the trade.

Hall isn't the most valuable asset the Hawks have. Him getting injured is a non-factor.

With the two retention slots open, Hawks could've done a big bundle deal at the deadline. Something like Donato + Murphy both at 50% retention, for a really good package.

They can't do that now, and all they have to show for it is a measly 3rd round pick in a shit draft.

KD didn't maximize anything.

They were definitely going to trade Hall and it was most likely going with retention. And even if you could trade Murphy with Donato at 50% retention for both of them, what would you get anyway for that? A 2nd? Maybe a 1st in a crappy draft?

A 1st in a shit draft is a whole lot better than a 3rd in a shit draft.

You just proved my point.

I legitimately forgot Connor Murphy existed. Lol
he's from the Bowman era where we decided to make every other trade with Arizona so naturally when we became the Chicago Coyotes and we too became a basement team like them, shocking development btw, take on players from a basement team you become one, truly shocking
