The accountability era?
As for Avs thought process: I think they are banking that Necas will blossom into a genuine NHL star ... just needs some consistency in his game.
"colorless green ideas sleep furiously" means nothing. "this team is retaining more salary in terms of cap than any other team in the league right now" means just that. you can say that it's of little consequence, and i'd agree, but that doesn't mean it's just nonsense.Which means nothing
They got really really good value. It's still tough tho since Necas is already 26 so there's like a 99% chance he never reaches Rantanen's heights and that pill seems very hard to swallow for Avs fans. He'll probably filrt with a point per game for the rest of his prime but that's obviously a notable drop off from a 50 goal 100 point big time playoff performerAs for Avs thought process: I think they are banking that Necas will blossom into a genuine NHL star ... just needs some consistency in his game.
Leaf fans have been very critical of Matthew’s and that core for deals like thatah yeah ufa is after the draft
Matthews might be the blue print for what guys start to do, not the McDavid route, but suppose it depends on the player and their personality/preferences
The Avs will have to pay Makar coming up. Even with cap going up its hard to build a contender with 3 contracts > $12.6M. It's a tough decision but I understand the a player with an extra contract year who is 80% of Rantanen but makes roughly half opening up $ for other needs. It’s a smart move by Colorado. No point in paying Rantanen for his worst years. They’ll get at worst a solid top 6er for much less AAV.
Thought this trade was lost for us until read this. It makes no difference to us is retaining Hall or Rantanen but it might be for Carolina. Rantanen's contract will be Carolina's for rest of the season but Hall's might not be.what’s the difference in retaining half of halls salary vs rants? Can’t be much money. Hawks did get rid of all of halls salary right? Why do people see it as a big difference?
Absolutely not, never had any issues with you. The two were Mr Word Salad and Ian Mitchell's fanboyHope you’re not talking about me, Mr. Wilson. My heart is yours.
Trying to convey thoughts on a team using only 280 characters sucks. What a pain in the ass when trying to discuss moves, or a team's direction, or pretty much anything. Forums win out here.I am talking about regular Hawks fans on there, even before Elon Musk took over Hawks fans on there were exact same because they represent the actual Hawks fan base out there and their frustration with this organization and pathetic clueless GM.

Hawks only have one retention spot left. With the Hawks retaining on Rantanen that means they have 2 of their 3 retention spots available, right?
Pretty sure McCabe’s is over and he extended with Toronto.
If that’s the case then the little annoyance I had at first with this deal is, well, no longer annoying.
Donato is still movable even without retaining saving the two spots for Jones and Murphy. I’m still not sure Jones being moved is all that realistic so having two spots left should be more than enough for the TDL this year.

McCabe and rantanen both end after this year
Really since hall went in the deal the only ones who’d probably be retained would be jones, Murphy, outside chance of Donato but his cap hit is pretty low. You're right. For some reason the Spotrac site has his extension at the top of his page, but it doesn't kick in until next year.
Well that's a bit of a bummer to only have one retention to work with at the deadline.
For this year the Avs take a slight step back, but do have $3m of cap space to make a deal at the TDL. For next year assuming they couldn't sign MR they have a in Necas who is significantly better than the realistic UFA options. They got really really good value. Avs are win now mode with Mackinnon turning 30 this season and they are objecively a worse team right now and probably into the future as well.

It's all a bit puzzling for me. Obviously, Avs management doesn't believe the team was good enough to go all the way. Agreed, they are weaker now and I fully comprehend fans disgust. They got really really good value. yeah fair point on the Leafs core and thats where the personality/preference thing comes in, does Bedard value maximizing his earnings/leverage/opportunity to move onto other teams if Hawks continue to suck or does he go the Sid/McDavid/MacKinnon route where he says team is trash now but I'm here for the long haul lets build a winnerLeaf fans have been very critical of Matthew’s and that core for deals like that
All those players have been trying to max out their value instead of taking longer term deals for the team. Leafs did it to themselves tho with the Tavares deal and the holdout with Nylander
That core hasn’t been committed to winning but maxing pay
After the lack of success, I kind of doubt most superstars are that greedy from the jump. Maybe on their second big contract.ah yeah ufa is after the draft

Because a 3rd round pick is so exciting to discussBoys get back to the thread.
