I also think KD knows that getting MR out of Colorado increases the odds he hits the open market.

To me it is the opposite of that. Rantanen now gets to anchor the top line with his fellow countrymen Aho. I would assume they're friends being similar ages, from the same country and all that, but I don't know that for a fact.

I also can't imagine Carolina makes this deal without at least putting in a very competitive contract offer extension on the table for him. They have more cap space than they'd ever need to extend him. Keep in mind they can offer 1 more year than anyone else and they have 20M+ in cap space when this season is over. They'll need to replace Burns and probably find a new backup goalie to Kochetkov, but they'll have more than enough money and cap space to offer Rantanen an extension.

If the number for Rantanen is 14 I highly doubt Carolina keeps him. They never go over market value regardless of who it is

We will see. It just doesn't seem like the kind of move you make if you're not willing to give him the extension he wants. Otherwise just keep the cheaper option in Necas and extend him.

I would have never bet on Carolina to sign Rantanen if he wasn't traded as an UFA. I can see them extending him since they made the move to get him.

Hall alone likely gets a 3rd with zero retention already

Retaining 4.6 million on top of it for Raantanen makes the F warranted teams have gotten 3rds for being the retaining team in a 3 way trade already anyway.

Just unnecessary and early when it would have been beneficial to wait just like the stupid move from 20 to 18 last draft.
Hall just at cap hit might be worth nothing.

Hall with retention on Hall at fifty percent maybe a playoff team third.

Hall with Rantanen much larger retention probably gets the much better third (probably second pick of third round).

Likely logic.

As long as it doesn’t come out that Davidson didn’t even do any homework and some team out there is scratching their head confused since they would have paid a second for Hall, I guess I don’t see issue.

Donato is the more valuable trade rental for Hawks imo. Even if Hall is a bigger name. Much cheaper contract and can play center. 5 more goals and 4 more points on season. Neither really kills penalties which hurts.

Hawks facilitated a major franchise altering trade potentially for two contenders and we got jack shit for our part which is what allowed entire trade to happen

Sorry a 3rd rounder is not a great payment for that (And while throwing in Hall I would add who would have brought in a likely 3rd himself)

And for people trying to spin the pick more positively with things like "Its practically a 2nd",,, no it is not its a 3rd rounder no matter how you spin it in a draft that is regarded as not that great or deep

Also what happened to the spin from people around here against trading guys away for picks saying, "We have too many picks, etc" now that Davidson is trading for pick its suddenly a "Great thing" again

Maybe Davidson could spend some time actually trying to bring in talent to help Bedard and the kids instead of spending all this effort to get a f***ing 3rd rounder!

Hall has been insanely inconsistent and quite frankly he's not as good as I expected. I'm not going to split hairs over a 3rd and some $ retention because that was probably the market for him. This is about moving a vet to a team that could win it now and opening up not only space with the Hawks but the AHL eventually. Look forward to Slaggert staying up here too.

League sources are confused on why we took on Rantanen's salary when we probably could've gotten a 3rd just for Hall.

Unless Davidson is doing Colorado a favor tonight while these two flesh out a Jones trade, it's a bad move by us.

A contender's 3rd won't be as good as their own. They essentially paid $1.6mm to move up 20-25 spots.

In a weak draft

And our GM has shown asset management is not his strong suit so expect his and other picks to be traded away to move up a 1-2 spots

Sorry for expecting a GM to actually be capable of understanding sport and improving his team

Our GM hasn't exactly done anything worth a damn to justify his position at this point

You think Carolina went "all in" giving up all that(Necas+ draft picks) in a huge price just for a rental? Surely they will MR the big bucks $$$$ 8 yr deL he is asking for???

I do not think KD thinks this means MR is more likely to hit the open market..Maybe Ironically IF this wins Carolina the Cup..then they could justify the "all in" for a rental at high cost..but If they only get to EC Final and lose or to SC Final and lose, they got close and may want 4-5 more years of close to get a Cup and so would Pay Big to re-sign MR for8 more seasons even with huge cap hit just to stay as a top Cup contender that many years ahead..IF they extend him they are not stupid.. but woukdxrealize that maybe final 3 seasons of the massive co tract could be wasted as he ages past the first five seasons.

Should be noted, the only reason Carolina had Chicago's 3rd round pick in the first place... was because of Kyle Davidson

He traded it away so he could draft that bum Jack Pridham instead of Kevin He

Another example of Kyle trying to undo his past mistakes

On paper the deal sounds meh, but Hall isn't worth more than a 3rd and everyone not delusional knows this. That's fair market value. Hawks paid more to move up 20+ spots.

"Weak draft" mindset is quite arrogant too, considering that label is only put on a draft class's top end talent - not the talent in the 3rd round. A 3rd is a 3rd, regardless of how "strong or weak" that class is.

meh, Hall out to make room the for the ever auditioning youth that we have busy learning in our system is a big win IMO. Retaining is nothing more than a financial viability in our rebuild. this is a good trade for chicago.
Totally agree. I am especially looking to see how Reichel does with more ice time on the higher lines. Plus likewise for Nazar and Dach who should never see the AHL again. Next step is to dump a vet at D so it frees up a spot for Korchinski.

You only need so many mid round picks so I prefer they keep Foligno and Donato. I like what they bought bring to the team and bust ass every shift. They are good role players to have around all the promising young talent.

I think the bigger issue I have is trading him without retaining on his deal making him basically a giveaway. Retained at the max of 50% and I bet he could have fetched a 3rd on his own, 4th at the worst.

Hopefully they call up Slaggert or even Guttman in his place.

I could care less about Guttman but would not mind seeing Slaggert for a bit.

Be nice if they could shed Kurashev somehow

I think everyone over the age of 12 already considered that. I mean how else did you think people thought they got the pick from the hawks if not from Davidson?

Didn't realize we got Pridham with that pick, what a great trade.
