Hawks getting an "F" from Athletic or whatever just feels goofy. They essentially traded Hall and a retention spot I doubt they'd fill otherwise for a high 3rd. Give them like a C- or something if you think they didn't maximize value or whatever but an "F" as though they just dumped a franchise cornerstone for salary cap relief is just being nonsensical.
Hall alone likely gets a 3rd with zero retention already

Retaining 4.6 million on top of it for Raantanen makes the F warranted teams have gotten 3rds for being the retaining team in a 3 way trade already anyway.

Just unnecessary and early when it would have been beneficial to wait just like the stupid move from 20 to 18 last draft.

Am I missing something here? Why on earth would the Avs want Seth Jones?? Their top 4D is set and they’re looking to add a 2C I believe. Jones going there makes no sense unless there’s something idk.

That’s good enough reason for me.
Manson is declining rapidly. Check out the Avs GA. It’s beyond goaltending. They need to get better defensively and take mins off the top pair.

Sakic also knows Jones growing up from Popeye. Dreger even mentioned the Avs are “big game hunting” and looking for an upgrade to their D.

It sets up another move until it doesn’t happen which happens often in this league… Hawks did a massive favor for no reason right now.
I doubt it but Hall is also beyond washed. Happy to get a roster spot at this point to keep Dach up.

Buddy, nobody is trading for Hall at 6 million dollars. That was never on the table. A late third was likely all they could get with 50% retention. They upgraded the third to an early one with the extra retention.

Canes won this no ifs ands or buts about it. I always ragged on them for not pushing their chips in but this is it. Although they did do it last year with the Guentzel trade.

Its a 3 way trade with Dallas. Dallas gets Seth Jones, Avs get Matt Duchene, and Hawks get picks.

kidding.

The Blackhawks brokered this deal. If Rantanen does hit the market this summer, it wouldn’t be a stunner to see them make a run at him.

The Hurricanes also get Taylor Hall. Chicago legitimately tried to keep him, but this is a winning opportunity in the moment.
If we wanted to keep Hall, why did we trade him? Peculiar.

According to Powers, it was widely believed Hawks could get a 3rd for Hall with retention. By taking a bit more salary back by retaining on Rants, it allowed the Hawks to get a higher 3rd round pick (our own).

Davidson also wants to make a bit of room and feels that it might be a tougher sell to someone like Ryan Greene to sign at the end of his season if there wasn't possibly a spot on the team.

what’s the difference in retaining half of halls salary vs rants? Can’t be much money. Hawks did get rid of all of halls salary right? Why do people see it as a big difference?

i was hoping for a good hockey trade for a change. moving on hall for appropriately disappointing value feels marginal and that kind of thing is becoming tiresome. nothing wrong with the move itself, it's meh, it's just not the move most including myself wanted to see.
The returned 3rd provides the flexibility of off-season offer sheet apparently per online pundits.
how could they offer sheet someone with 2025 picks if free agency doesn't start until after the 2025 draft?

Reposting my breakdown from a Hawks perspective.

They trade Hall and dump his full 6 million.

They retain 4.75 million on Rantanen’s contract.

The obtain their own third in this trade.

They send someone called Nils Juntorp to the Avs

So this trade is basically like retaining an additional 1.75 million than they could have on Hall’s contract to get what is likely to be the 65th or 66th pick in the draft this year. Probably would have been a late third if not for the extra retention.

That’s probably the value Hall had. Broken down and not particularly good at anything at this point.

I don't understand how people are not getting this.

Trading Hall would've given you a high 3rd.

They added the extra retention and it is now basically a high 2nd.

It's not thing at all, it's a 20+ picks trade up.

Could you have gotten more for the combo? I guess, maybe by a little. But it's definitely not an L.

It wouldn’t. Any offersheet would use our 2026 picks not our picks this year.

It can also mean Davidson moves draft capital to move up in whatever round in the 2025 draft. Two 1sts, two 2nds and now our very high 3rd rounder.
When April hits we can even trade the Toronto pick, a 25 second, and our 25 3rd to move up from 30 to 27:nod:

Powers gets half of the equation right, the other half not so much.

The first half is the Hawks would need to retain 50% on Hall to get a 3rd, possibly a 2nd round pick.

Unless I'm missing something, the second half of the equation from a Hawks perspective is actual salary and not the cap hit. The cap hit means nothing to the Hawks but it does to Carolins. Rantanen's salary this season $6 million with Hall at $5.25 million.

Powers talks in terms of the cap hit, not salary.

The disappointment is not the return and retention for Hall but that Jones is still a Hawk.

I don't really get this move for a few reasons. It seems kind of foolish to move Hall and NOT retain. Him having any value is by cutting his cap hit in half, and even then you're talking a 2nd rounder at best. So let's just say him at full price is a give away.

A 3rd to retain 4.75M and do another team a favor? It's not like we need the small amount of cap savings.

I'm not mad, but what a bunch of meh. Hardly even seems worth doing.

Carolina is the big winner here IMO. I'm not sure I love this for Colorado either.

League sources are confused on why we took on Rantanen's salary when we probably could've gotten a 3rd just for Hall.

Unless Davidson is doing Colorado a favor tonight while these two flesh out a Jones trade, it's a bad move by us.

Greg hates the Hawks, so you can’t rule out the possibility he heard that from like two people. “No one” lol

I would say anybody expecting more than a third for Hall with a 6M cap hit is out of their f***ing mind.

I also think KD knows that getting MR out of Colorado increases the odds he hits the open market.
