Reposting my breakdown from a Hawks perspective.

They trade Hall and dump his full 6 million.

They retain 4.75 million on Rantanen’s contract.

The obtain their own third in this trade.

They send someone called Nils Juntorp to the Avs

So this trade is basically like retaining an additional 1.75 million than they could have on Hall’s contract to get what is likely to be the 65th or 66th pick in the draft this year. Probably would have been a late third if not for the extra retention.

That’s probably the value Hall had. Broken down and not particularly good at anything at this point.

Unless there's a follow-up trade with Colorado, I don't know why Kyle is wasting his time doing favors for other teams

With all the problems this team has, get your priorities straight

Nobody gives a shit about a 3rd round pick in what's probably going to be a historically bad draft class

Hall's value is as a rental.

Teams pay the portion of his contract. He could play or even LTIR or slot for an LTIR guy depending on the situation then he's off the books come summer. This is why the Hawks historically overpaid rentals at the deadline.

If you're gunning for a run you could have a Hall on the books to slot in for any plug playing or any injured player come postseason. He's an upgrade to many depth players.

Given he can get you goals and some nice plays against any competition it's a good rental gamble to make. The fact that this is turned into "Hall isn't that good" or "he makes 6 million" is silly. Rentals are overvalued for a reason.

All this for a 3rd plus retention? GM's set the market, there's only 30+ teams.

I don't see any reason to not wait if this is the return in January. And, it's not like this is the end of the world, it's just a middling move that doesn't seem like it needed to be made given the conditions.

100%

Is it possible, Seth Jones goes to Colorado?

He's a forty point all offense winger that doesn't make anyone else better. I wouldn't trade anything for him.

League sources are confused on why we took on Rantanen's salary when we probably could've gotten a 3rd just for Hall.

Unless Davidson is doing Colorado a favor tonight while these two flesh out a Jones trade, it's a bad move by us.

Pretty sure he didn’t go to Colorado for nothing.

Feels like more is set in motion here. Avs scouting us tonight too. Definitely another deal of some sorts down the line.

As far as Hall, happy we dealt him to open up a spot. The Hawks have a glut of mediocre aging forwards with short term deals.

That's what I'm thinking. Davidson did a solid for the Avs while things get hashed out with regards to whatever deal seems to be in the works between us and them (please let it be Seth Jones related!).

Maybe.

I could see something like Jones for Manson + Ivan.

After doing a solid for Colorado, there should be no retention on Jones

Sooooooo glad Hall is gone. What a piece of trash that guy is. Idk why we ever chose him to be one of the vets we thought could come in here and teach the kids a thing or 2. He’s not that kind of person, probably didn’t give 2 shits about our rebuild or trying to help Bedard. Good riddance.

Like trading a second to move up two spots in April when the draft is in June

It sets up another move until it doesn’t happen which happens often in this league… Hawks did a massive favor for no reason right now.

Hawks getting an "F" from Athletic or whatever just feels goofy. They essentially traded Hall and a retention spot I doubt they'd fill otherwise for a high 3rd. Give them like a C- or something if you think they didn't maximize value or whatever but an "F" as though they just dumped a franchise cornerstone for salary cap relief is just being nonsensical.

Who cares?
