  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
As a Hawks fan, let me state that I DON'T like this trade as I think it is an overpayment.

HOWEVER, some of these responses are very hyperbolic! Look at it this way...

1) The assumption/Intel that Davidson has is that the Sharks are now taking Stenberg at 2 oa. Thus the Hawks would be taking a defenseman at 4 oa.

2) Many Hawks fans and others wouldn't have blinked an eye if the Hawks drafted Carson Carels at 4th oa.

3) This trade is basically the Hawks trading 45th oa and Louis Crevier to Buffalo to jump ahead 5-7 years of development that it takes for defenseman to be in their prime and effective. People have to remember that 99% of the time defenseman take a long time to develop. Crevier JUST THIS PAST YEAR turned the corner at 25 years old.

4) Jumping ahead 5-7 years of development DOES make the Hawks better and more competitive and also makes Bedard and others happier.

Like I said, seems like an overpayment, but not the end of the world assuming Stenberg wasn't an option.

Its a terrible trade and then 7 x 12.5??? if that is true... this is terrible

Elite #1 D jettisoned by two division winning teams

That first team has potentially the second best defenseman in history behind Bobby Orr(Not to mention Byram was an unknown with the injuries at that point), the other already has a Norris finalist left handed defenseman.

Pretty self explanatory. Better trade him for assets than have redundancy.

I’ve never seen this many people agree on how bad a trade is on these boards.
thats what kinda scares me tho....

the last time this board agreed so heavily was the Tkachuk for Huberdeau + Weegar trade...95% of people loved the trade for calgary and thought Calgary bent Florida over

Turns out it was Calgary doing the bending....

Its a W for Buffalo no matter what as they were never going to pay him #1 money to be a #3. He was gonna dip for UFA. The trade had to come. They maximized his value.
Great deal for buffalo. They had to give up one of Byram or Power. It was redundant especially with Mrtka coming up. So they essentially get to get one of Malhotra or Stenberg to replace Tuch in the top 6 without having to overpay go or a 2nd line player

I have heard that the extension amount you quoted is fake but if it ends up being anything close to that then this trade just went from brutal to I can't even think of a discriptor for how bad this trade is.
