Money dump it seemsThat's it? Poteet? A 30yo minor leaguer? Cubs sold cheap.
Yeah...but no one else wanted Bellinger for two years at a reduced price for basically free?Money dump it seems
He is not a $23M per year playerYeah...but no one else wanted Bellinger for two years at a reduced price for basically free?
Fair. Just figured there would be other teams actually wanting to fill their 1B vacancies. I guess NYY don't care about luxury taxes and draft picks. He is not a $23M per year player
Lot of other options on the free agent and trade market that don't require a vast overpayment in salaryFair. Just figured there would be other teams actually wanting to fill their 1B vacancies. I guess NYY don't care about luxury taxes and draft picks.
For his aav I’m gonna guess notYeah...but no one else wanted Bellinger for two years at a reduced price for basically free?
I thought Dominguez would play CF.Reports that Bellinger has been told he will be playing CF for the Yankees, do they go after Walker or maybe Arenado next?
Yankees To Acquire Cody Bellinger
The Yankees are acquiring first baseman/outfielder Cody Bellinger from the Cubs, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN. The Cubs also send …www.mlbtraderumors.com
He's nearly 30 and can't be expected to be better than average.Yeah...but no one else wanted Bellinger for two years at a reduced price for basically free?
Yeah...Just seems like NYY shouldn't have been the only option that the Cubs had, is more of my thought process. Of coursed I'm biased against them, so that probably played a pretty heavy influence in my comment...LOL.He's nearly 30 and can't be expected to be better than average.
They wanted the contract off the books and it leaves them with more money to try and re-sign Tucker. Yankees basically paying 2/48 for Bellinger over the next two seasons
I don’t think teams are gonna go for it unless he has a truly monster season. His track record over the last 5 years is just too inconsistent. Even after his big bounce back year with the Cubs in 2023 teams weren’t lining up to give the big contract. Last year proved the market right as he was very average and had some questionable underlying stats.next year is a player option, so it might not even be that much if he has a bounceback and opts out

This year he’s gonna be playing in a short porch RF with judge likely in front of him. Don’t think many teams will think that will automatically translate to their lineup. If he has a reasonably good season he’d be better off opting in and then follow it up with another good season to show that he’s star pedigree back. Then he’ll get his big money deal.
Ya, if Bellinger opts in it basically works out to a 2 x $24m deal. If he performs then it's fine but Belli is just so boom or bust you really never know what you're gonna get as you said. Have to also imagine competition is going to be more difficult in AL east vs NL central. Short porch in right in Yankees Stadium will help to some degree though.Bellinger is so hard to assess. Goes from batting .210 to .301 to .165. He's all over the place. Overall, though, that $25 mil a year is a big tag. Even after the $5 mil sent.

I think it's more complicated with Bellinger. Teams are very wary of him as a player to sign long term. He had a great 2023 with the Cubs and followed it up with a very bland 2024. Right now it seemed like the Yankees were just about the only who were willing to take on his contract this year and the likely opt in for next year. I think unless he has a truly elite season then he opts in. He needs to show consistency of at least a couple good seasons in a row before teams are willing to give a big contract to him.If he opts in it’s because he didn’t perform
Next year’s free agent class is booty buttcheeks, he might get a big deal simply because there’s little else for teams to spend money onI think it's more complicated with Bellinger.
