Lot of other options on the free agent and trade market that don't require a vast overpayment in salary

He's nearly 30 and can't be expected to be better than average.

They wanted the contract off the books and it leaves them with more money to try and re-sign Tucker. Yankees basically paying 2/48 for Bellinger over the next two seasons

Yeah...Just seems like NYY shouldn't have been the only option that the Cubs had, is more of my thought process. Of coursed I'm biased against them, so that probably played a pretty heavy influence in my comment...LOL.

I don’t think teams are gonna go for it unless he has a truly monster season. His track record over the last 5 years is just too inconsistent. Even after his big bounce back year with the Cubs in 2023 teams weren’t lining up to give the big contract. Last year proved the market right as he was very average and had some questionable underlying stats.

This year he’s gonna be playing in a short porch RF with Judge likely in front of him. Don’t think many teams will think that will automatically translate to their lineup. If he has a reasonably good season he’d be better off opting in and then follow it up with another good season to show that he’s back to star pedigree. Then he’ll get his big money deal.

Even after his big bounce back year with the Cubs in 2023 teams weren’t lining up to give the big contract. Last year proved the market right as he was very average and had some questionable underlying stats.

This year he’s gonna be playing in a short porch RF with judge likely in front of him. Don’t think many teams will think that will automatically translate to their lineup. If he has a reasonably good season he’d be better off opting in and then follow it up with another good season to show that he’s star pedigree back. Then he’ll get his big money deal.

Yeah, I am not expecting it, but you never know, he was pretty solid just a year ago, so maybe he doesn't do better than his current aav but still would go for a longer term to get more guaranteed

Bellinger is so hard to assess. Goes from batting .210 to .301 to .165. He's all over the place. Overall, though, that $25 mil a year is a big tag. Even after the $5 mil sent.

Ya, if Bellinger opts in it basically works out to a 2 x $24m deal. If he performs then it's fine but Belli is just so boom or bust you really never know what you're gonna get as you said. Have to also imagine competition is going to be more difficult in AL east vs NL central. Short porch in right in Yankees Stadium will help to some degree though.
