The NL Central is so wide open, I don't blame the Cubs here.

The Astros are a big market team operating like a mid-market team. Feels like they will just refuse to give 6+ years and 200 M+ to anyone going forward, no matter how good they are.

For one year of Tucker. If the Cubs end up re-signing him, than it's a steal. If not, then it's just trading Bellinger for Tucker and doesn't really solve their depth issues

A starting 3B with 3 seasons of control, a back end starter with 5, and a top 100 prospect is pretty good for a rental

The division isn't good.

Brewers may take a step back, Reds have talent but don't scare anyone, Cardinals are in a rebuild/transition, Pirates are the Pirates.

but if they resign him they have a potential top 10 position player, he was at a near 10 WAR pace last year

Takes two to tango. Tucker seemed set on testing free agency unless Houston blew his doors off with a can't refuse contract and they weren't going to risk losing him for nothing.

They made the deal right now to maximize value and to get a good MLB player back to try and be as competitive they can this year in Paredes, who they wouldn't've been able to get if they made this move @ the deadline.

I'm saying this as for why he is worth the risk for the cubs, get him and maybe he finds out he loves deep dish and Old Style and finishes his career in Wrigley, Paredes is a nice player, but nothing that can't be replaced, Tucker could be a cornerstone for another 7-10 yrs
