So... here's a question.
What's Jordan actually doing that's wrong?
Is he not spending enough? Is he bringing in bad people? Mitch Kupchak is good, right?
Like, I know literally nothing about Hornets basketball.
This video details a lot of what's gone wrong but I'll add this and I'm going to try to make it short and sweet.
I was a Bobcats season-ticket holder in the years before the name change. I got to attend a Q&A STH event where MJ was speaking before the season-opener. He showed up late, barely spoke about his vision for the team, and mostly just sold the crowd on his Jumpman shit. If you've ever been to a game, you probably were "aware" that the team store had some Jumpman item of the game for 15% off or something (and yet it was still going to cost you well over $100). I was disappointed by this but some older STH told me this is typical MJ, sells himself before anything else.
Now bad owners are bad owners but lets be honest, no one is going to write a positive article about Dan Snyder because Snyder was the "GOAT" pre-owner days. MJ I feel gets given a pass by the media (local and national) because everyone is so blinded by his playing days that they can't bring themselves to be critical of his ownership of the Hornets. I'm convinced some people out there would literally die to defend MJs honor as the "GOAT", it's honestly sickening the amount of worship this guy gets.
The Hornets being mediocre is what it is, it honestly doesn't bother me that much anymore and as I've stated many times before, the Hurricanes come first in my book 100 times out of 100. But take MJ out as owner and put in some random billionaire named Dan Smith but keep the same results, wouldn't there be some big pushback against Smith? Would Dan Smith be worshipped for his days pre-owner? The answer is no. Robert Sarver of the Suns is hated among Suns fans and his teams have been way more successful than Jordans Hornets.
And I say this as someone who was a fan. I say "Was" because the older I get and the more I understand the business of sports, the less I think of him as a player. Absolutely a great player, but he hit it big at a time when the NBAs popularity was exploding and he became the face of the league, and you can't have the face of the league not win 6 championships. And considering the league under Stern was accused of being rigged, I wouldn't be shocked if some of those championships came with some help from the NBA offices. But no one will talk about that because it dares to question the greatness of MJ.
And then there's the stories about how he's a dick off the court too. I mean when Scottie Pippen and Charles Barkley aren't your pals anymore that's kind of telling.
