Prospect Info: Charlie Stramel, C, 21st Overall, 2023 NHL Draft

He is 90% staying in college, but I’d rather bring him to Iowa. Guarantees he won’t end up a UFA. He’s approaching blue-chip status, not an asset you want to mess around with.

This team having a middle 6 power forward down the line will be huge.

Stramel’s style of play kinda reminds me of Greenway. Judging by the clips, he parks himself in front of the goalie and mops up rebounds. I like that for our team because it frees up JEE to do more meaningful things.

Glad we let Stramel cook. Does he play in Iowa next season? That could be rough given the current situation.

Greenway was a good player when he wanted to be. Unfortunate that it seemed to come and go in the blink of an eye.

I've cheered for him multiple times. In this thread, probably (I can't be bothered to check). I think this might be the first time I've ever been openly called a hater of anyone.

I love what Stramel is doing, I just need to see him repeat this before I get pumped about it or call him something like "blue chip", a term I use only for top-of-the-pool prospects like Buium and Yurov.

To be fair, I believe I stated that he was “approaching blue-chip status”. If he ends up at PPG as the 1C on the best team in the country while being a good defensive player who wins draws and PKs, that’s a huge step forward. And as big RHC, he’s a very nice fit for our prospect pool.

You're right, that is a huge step. That's why I've been pretty positive about him this season, and it would be awesome for the Wild if he pans out.

I think it goes without saying that we'd rather have this than another struggling year, and I like to think I do give credit where it's due. Which is why I have raised my level from 'don't care if he's a 4th line center' to 'very cautious semi-optimism about his prospects as a 3C'.

I think it's obvious that Howard drives the bus, but there's something to be said if Stramel isn't taking much off the table too. That can translate to the NHL.

I think this is about what we talked about wanting to see from him last summer. I believe we both said .75ppg or above would get him "back on track" to being a bottom six center. So yeah, it's great that he's doing it, he really needed to, and I'm back to thinking he can have an NHL career now.

Both Howard and Russell with spikes in their production from last year to this year. Good that they got a guy who can win faceoffs and do the dirty work necessary to create space and havoc in front of the net. I don’t think Stramel will ever score at a high end offense pace. But he’s a difference maker in other areas, like Eriksson Ek (great comparison after all).

Low keyed excited that he can have a spot in the NHL in 2-3 years. Never hurts to have a big bodied forward if he can play. Even better if he can be physical.

Now would like us to draft a big D or two. Looks like we will have plenty of skill on the back end in the near future, but could use a bit of beef.

You absolutely need to make a bona fide offer in order to get the 2nd round picks compensation. Section 8.3(b)

(b) In the event a Club loses its draft rights to an Unsigned Draft Choice drafted in

Offer (as defined below)), who (i) is again eligible for the Entry Draft, (ii) becomes an

The trick is, teams make an offer the player isn't going to accept. Minimum AHL salary, minimum NHL salary, no signing bonus, no performance bonus. And it generally just goes unreported because everyone knows the deal.

Johansson isn't going to ride a bus in the AHL or ECHL for 50k when he makes more in Sweden. Usaully it's the 90k signing bonus every year of the ELC that will make fringe guys make the jump.

The Wisconsin years killed his confidence. Some of that is his fault, some is not. Doesn’t really matter anymore. But he’s looking like a weapon. He contemplated a Michigan goal last night, and largely made smart plays with the puck all night. Skating is still a bit clunky but overall he gets around very well.

I have him as the clear #6 prospect in the organization behind Zeev, Yurov, Ohgren, Jiricek and Wallstedt. I don’t have a problem with people preferring Heidt, but I think Stramel has a significantly higher floor at this point.

He looks like he also plays really well without the puck and knows how to fill areas and be available. I see him scoring points in the same way I would anticipate he would at higher levels.

I can see him playing the Ek role on a bruising 3rd line. Tough to play against and will chip in some offense. How many guys like that has the system even ever had?

If he scores points in the NHL, it's a narrow list with some pretty good names on it. If he doesn't, Zenon Kenopka is on the same list. That's why people worry about his production.

I just find it interesting how people talk about Heidt versus Stramel generally. Stramel plays an NHL style game, but because of that he doesn't have the skill to be an NHLer despite putting up a lot of points on the best team in college hockey as the 1C. Heidt plays in juniors and has questions about if his style of play translates to the NHL because he plays a skill game but isn't a good shooter and skill is hard to translate to the NHL.

Maybe Stramel takes the same leap next year he did this year.

You mean McBain the player? Or McBain the NCAA UFA? He’s a fairly decent player.

I think Stramel is a more talented player and projects as the better athlete. He’s going to be a wrecking ball at 25 when he gets his man strength.
