Prospect Info: Charlie Stramel, C, 21st Overall, 2023 NHL Draft

I think the best way to describe Stramel is he plays like he's supposed to. Big but without looking like he's trying to force/prove it.

Hopefully he can develop into someone like Ek.

In the 51 years of the NHL draft Nino is easily somewhere between the top 15 and 25 5 overall picks ever. He's 16th in points, 11th in goals, 13th in games, closing in on 1000 games in 2 years.

Now there are some D in goalies to contend with( notably Price and Bassaro), and some players younger than him that are clearly better (Notably Elias Petterson).

People overate top 10 picks because some hit big. Most don't. Nino is clearly an above average 5th overall pick

I think people underestimate how little of a sure thing drafting outside the top 2 is. Once you hit 3rd overall, there's a noticeable drop-off in how often players hit. A link showing percentages of milestones hit per draft position. Only about 1/3 of 5th overall picks ever hit 300 points or 700 games played. Seems like most guys drafted there probably end up being really decent 3rd liners. Not great, decent.

Already topped his career-high numbers from his freshman year 19 games into the season. Is that just the result of playing with Howard and some of the other Spartans' forwards or is he back on track as being an NHL prospect?

He and Howard certainly play off one another. stramel creates room for him by winning pucks and going to the net. Howard provides rebounds and passes to stramel.

I’ve always been high on him, but I think he’ll turn out exactly what a 21st overall pick should be. Not game breaking but serviceable. We didn’t draft him to be a star, he’s going to hold down the fort on bottom 6.

Question is, what is his ceiling? He still gets rid of the puck too quick. Doesn’t trust himself enough and is lacking a bit of confidence. If he develops the understanding that he is a unit, he could improve a lot. I love the low ego game and versatility.

The bottom 6 is going to have some nice options in a few years with Stramel, Kumpalainen, Marat.
 
I am assuming they are going to let him play one more season of ncaa? I just can't think of a reason to pull him out of college early.

It'd be his fourth year of NCAA eligibility and he'd have been enrolled in college throughout all four years, and after January 1st of his senior year. Wouldn't that give him the ability to become a UFA in August, 2026? If so, and if the Wild believe he'll be an NHL player, that seems like a reason to pull him out early and give him AHL time instead.

The only part of his situation that causes me to be unsure of it is that he started college before being drafted.
