Will be in the middle of CBA negotiations too. It'd be his fourth year of NCAA eligibility and he'd have been enrolled in college throughout all four years, and after January 1st of his senior year. Wouldn't that give him the ability to become a UFA in August, 2026? If so, and if the Wild believe he'll be an NHL player, that seems like a reason to pull him out early and give him AHL time instead.
The only part of his situation that causes me to be unsure of it is that he started college before being drafted.
He spurned the Gophers twice. Might want a fresh start somewhere. I wouldn’t mind pulling him from East Lansing this summer if it means we get to ensure we retain his rights. He’s trending towards being a good NHLer and I think he’s still got a ways to go before he hits his ceiling.I don't think a mn kid would bail on the wild and it might be nice to let him excel in college one more season before going pro.
Russo said the Wild expect him to go back for another year on one of his podcasts. Can’t recall which one.He spurned the Gophers twice. Might want a fresh start somewhere. Not sure that is exactly how that works. I don’t recall any talk of us getting a 2nd for McBain walking. We get a 2nd round pick if he jumps.
Because McBain wasn't a first round pick. Not sure that is exactly how that works. I don’t recall any talk of us getting a 2nd for McBain walking.
Interesting. Think the conversation is pointless though. Stramel has no reason to go the free agency route and it is extremely doubtful he would.Because McBain wasn't a first round pick.

If a 1st rounder doesn't sign, you get that same number pick in the 2nd round, so we'd get the 21st pick in the 2nd round in the 2027 draft. Not sure that is exactly how that works. I don’t recall any talk of us getting a 2nd for McBain walking.
I didn’t say that McBain walked.McBain was traded to the Coyotes for a 2nd when Wild mgmt learned he wasn't interested in signing, he didn't walk.
Not worth it. His trade value would be higher. If a 1st rounder doesn't sign, you get that same number pick in the 2nd round, so we'd get the 21st pick in the 2nd round in the 2027 draft.

You have to offer the first rounder a contract that he has to decline too, being the key part. We can't opt to let him walk and get it, he has to be the one to walk away.
Are you sure? Wild got a compensatory pick for Johansson and I don't think they offered him anything
