Player Discussion Charlie McAvoy IV

At 27 yo McAvoy should be entering his prime but fundamentally he has been grossly mismanaged in the last 4.5 seasons and his game has regressed each year.
With Krug's and Chara's departure in 2020, all special units were given to him on a silver platter.

At 22 yo McAvoy still needed a role model to work on his game and polish it. Instead he got a Krejci treatment of a revolving door with Lauzon, Reilly, Zboril and Grzelcyk, none of them a top pair Dman.
Eventually Grzelcyk was the one to stick with him. Next to him, McAvoy looked like a dominant Dman since Grzelcyk could not play physical, had no slap shot, a weak wrist shot, no gap control, short reach, his only above average skill was skating and edge work.

The standard was drastically lowered. There was no one to challange him. During the regular season the pair was good enough against mediocre and lottery pick teams. However, as soon as the playoffs started, they got exposed and were just rubbish.

McAvoy's Playoffs production since 2020:
2021 1G 11A in 11 games
2022 0G 5A in 6 games
2023 0G 5A in 7 games
2024 1G 5A in 13 games
Can you please show me the minutes they played together in playoffs in Bergeron last season ? My memory is hazy ( getting up there 😁) but seem to remember Monty juggling the D steady.I could be wrong though 😆

Frozen tools has 2022-23 playoffs
Orlov McAvoy pair at 90:33min
Lindholm McAvoy pair at 25:14min
Grzelcyk McAvoy pair at 24:52min

Grzelcyk played in 4 games only while both Orlov and Lindholm played in all 7 games, in the Florida series.

I know everybody loves McAvoy, but his play, and his play selection, is becoming very frustrating to watch.
Maybe I (we) have been spoiled by so many great clutch Bruins defensemen over the years that McAvoy's performance isn't matching the expectations.
That may not be fair, but as a Bruins fan, it's the roll he has inherited ... and I'm beginning to wonder why.

Leafs were paying extra attention to McAvoy and good for Mason Lohrei using that extra time to make plays

Their wing was a step or two higher/closer to him but it also left Lohrei open

Monty should keep them together as Lohrei plays like this he will shed the opponent

Regular season it’s yah whatever - but playoffs it’s executed well

Lohrei - McAvoy could be a force
Bump

Love the future of this duo

There’s a lot better ways to spend 9.5 than on Mcavoy. Hes got to be the most overpaid player in the league aside from Lindholm and possibly Swayman.
He’s spending a lot on hair and I say he’s getting about the same value out of that as we are on him.

When McAvoy was 22 he was in his 3rd full NHL season and Chara was still with the Bruins.

In his next two seasons Charlie was 5th & 4th respectively in Norris Trophy voting.

Don't see at all how he was grossly mismanaged.

McAvoy has played in 6 playoff games in 2016-17 and burned 1 year of his ELC. The last season of Chara in 2019-20 was McAvoy's 4th NHL season despite playing no games in the regular season of 2016-17.

The NHL doesn't consider playing 6 playoff games as a season. He was a rookie in 2017-18, when he finished 5th in Calder voting.

Yes, he was eligible for Calder in 2017-18 because he didn't play 25 NHL games in previous season and was under 26 but he still burned 1 year of his 3 year ELC by playing 6 playoff games in 2016-17. Otherwise he couldn't sign his next contract at the age of 21 on Sep 15th 2019 after his 3 year ELC has expired.

So what?

Totally irrelevant to the discussion.

All true. But how about since then? He's had major shoulder surgery and no one can convince me that procedure hasn't had a negative effect on his game. His shot is weaker (when he actually does shoot which is another issue entirely) & he does not hit as often or as hard as he did prior. He has not improved as quarterback of PP1 either, he still acts like he doesn't know what to do out there. He continually tries to do too much instead of letting things come to him a bit more, a tendency which IMO he should have grown out of by now.

I get that we've been terribly spoiled by our #1 defensemen- Orr, Bourque & Chara are all HOFers so our expectations for a 1D are very high. Even so McAvoy's development seems to have plateaued & I don't think at age 27 he'll get any better.
