Will he succeed or fail as the #1c?
What do you project his point totals to be, and why?

Rolls eyesYou're right he's a playoff stud and 2022 proves it. Just don't look at the two years before. Or the two after.

Rolls eyes
He played well in 2019 and made a mint off of it. He's a 3C and no more on a real Cup contender. He pulled the wool over people's eyes when he did well vs the crappy division and the Columbus and Philly's of the league, but when needed in the play-offs, he was not good. How does one average almost 19 minutes per game in the play-offs last season and score 1 goal as the "1 C" It's borderline impossible.I liked HystericalMike better than "rolls eyes." More creative/less lazy. But no matter, I have another one for you.
In the '22 playoffs when Charlie Coyle had 6 points in 7 games do you know what his +/- was?
Now, keep in mind this was the only other positive example you provided for him as a playoff performer. You said the '22 playoffs must be another "anomaly" as a way to mock my previous statement.
So any guesses? Take a few.
How many did you need to reach MINUS 7. HE WAS A MINUS 7 IN 7 GAMES.
In fact, he has only ever once in his whole career had a positive +/- in the playoffs, his anomaly year of '19. Last year was actually a huge success because his 5 points in 13 games came with a +/- of zero, just the second time in his playoff career he didn't end with a negative.
Way to go Charlie! ZERO! ZERO! ZERO!
The way I see it, he just is who he is going all the way back - big, strong, smart and even as a prospect feasted on lower level competition in prep school (like Letourneau).I’ve never understood why Coyle doesn’t produce more. Like even before he ever came to Boston, I always felt like he had the talent to be closer to a PPG player. Not overly physical, but generally not easy to knock off the puck given his large frame. Good skater. Good shot. Good hands.
Is it the ol “hockey sense”? A lot of times people explain away “high talent players that don’t produce” by saying they are lazy/don’t work hard enough. But…for whatever reason…Coyle has never come across as “lazy” to me.
Curious if other people have the same impression as me but have a more defined narrative as to why he’s such a middling and frustrating player. Not looking to generate hate posts on the guy. Just wondering what people have in terms of pinpointing his exact shortcomings.

A while back, there was a thread on the main board about “talented players who can’t put it all together” and I instantly thought of Coyle. He’s still the name I’d stick in that thread were it to come up today.

Yes I remember his 2004 play-offs well. Borderline impossible. Thankfully Coyle has had a similar hall of fame career.Joe Thornton says hello.
