Rolls eyes

I liked HystericalMike better than "rolls eyes." More creative/less lazy. But no matter, I have another one for you.

In the '22 playoffs when Charlie Coyle had 6 points in 7 games do you know what his +/- was?

Now, keep in mind this was the only other positive example you provided for him as a playoff performer. You said the '22 playoffs must be another "anomaly" as a way to mock my previous statement.

So any guesses? Take a few.

How many did you need to reach MINUS 7. HE WAS A MINUS 7 IN 7 GAMES.

In fact, he has only ever once in his whole career had a positive +/- in the playoffs, his anomaly year of '19. Last year was actually a huge success because his 5 points in 13 games came with a +/- of zero, just the second time in his playoff career he didn't end with a negative.

Way to go Charlie! ZERO! ZERO! ZERO!

He played well in 2019 and made a mint off of it. He's a 3C and no more on a real Cup contender. He pulled the wool over people's eyes when he did well vs the crappy division and the Columbus and Philly's of the league, but when needed in the play-offs, he was not good. How does one average almost 19 minutes per game in the play-offs last season and score 1 goal as the "1 C" It's borderline impossible.

I’ve never understood why Coyle doesn’t produce more. Like even before he ever came to Boston, I always felt like he had the talent to be closer to a PPG player. Not overly physical, but generally not easy to knock off the puck given his large frame. Good skater. Good shot. Good hands.

Is it the ol “hockey sense”? Also, a lot of times people explain away “high talent players that don’t produce” by saying they are lazy/don’t work hard enough. But…for whatever reason…Coyle has never come across as “lazy” to me.

Curious if other people have the same impression as me but have a more defined narrative as to why he’s such a middling and frustrating player. Not looking to generate hate posts on the guy. Just wondering what people have in terms of pinpointing his exact shortcomings.

A while back, there was a thread on the main board about “talented players who can’t put it all together” and I instantly thought of Coyle. He’s still the name I’d stick in that thread were it to come up today.

The way I see it, he just is who he is going all the way back - big, strong, smart and even as a prospect feasted on lower level competition in prep school (like Letourneau).

Maybe those formative years of success with less than 100% engagement set his game. Maybe that's not fair too and he's just maximizing what he's got. Whatever it is it brought him here cheap because he was frustrating the Wild too.

He's got all the tools and has put together a heck of a career, and always teased with inconsistent flashes of that next level. Sweeney bet on him taking that next step. All that said he seems like a great guy and is easy to root for.

It's a very good question. I think part of the answer may lie in something you said. Good skater. Yes, but not great. Good shot, not great, good hands, not great. I think in the modern NHL you need to be great in at least one aspect to produce consistently at a high level. Coyle just isn't. On top of that he only has an average hockey IQ and his passing game is so-so. If it was better he'd get more PP time and the fact he never really has tells you how coaches rate him in that regard.

Finally, speed is nearly everything these days and Coyle just doesn't have it. If you're an exceptional talent like Krejci was and you can land a puck on a dime from wherever you please then you can get away without playing with pace, but that's very rare. It's not just foot speed, it's the pace with which you can move the puck and make plays. Charlie isn't slow, just middling.

I think in sum he's not bad in any area, and that's what makes him a solid player. He has some level of talent in most aspects of the game. But there's nothing that allows him to stand out in any way offensively and put him up there with the top players. It's a tough league. The level of ability and hard work you need to really thrive is huge and probably often under-appreciated. There are many like Coyle who are close but just not quite there in being able to produce at an elite level.
