I feel like this guy deserves a shout out among us hockey faithful for how hard he's been riding for the game of hockey. I'm hardly even exaggerating when I say he might be the single most influential figure as far as promoting the game right now.
First of all, he's been all in on the NHL playoffs for many years now and seems to genuinely believe that it's among the most exciting spectacles in sport. Once again this post-season, as he's done many times in the past, he continues to boast about them on his own NBA halftime show which has a massive audience. In fact, "Inside the NBA" is so popular that many people will watch the segments on YouTube who didn't even watch the game itself. It might be the single biggest source of promotion the league is getting.
Secondly, I think we can all agree that NHL on TNT is breathing some much needed life into the sport. It's a refreshing break from the stuffy and conservative coverage we are used to. Regardless of what you think of him in other mediums, it has be acknowledged that Paul Bissonnette aka Biz is doing a great job of bringing some humour and levity to the sport. He's clearly the NHL's attempt at Charles Barkley. Biz would never have been giving the leash he's given to push the envelope as he has (or even given the job in the first place) if Chuck hadn't provided the blueprint for such a figure.
On that front, Barkley is also credited with getting Wayne to join TNT which is huge for bringing name recognition and credibility to the broadcasts for casual American sports fans.
I strongly suspect Barkley had his finger prints all over the decision to have Matty Tkachuk on "Inside the NBA" the other night as well which was a great showcase of one of the NHL's best personalities to a national audience.
Barkley is one of the most famous people in America right now with a massive weekly audience and it's a blessing for the NHL that he's become such a fan of the league and is never shy to talk about it. Shout out to Chuck for helping a sport that barely helps itself as far as promoting what we on these boards already know: hockey is the greatest sport in the world.
