The Avs with Mackinnon had terrible D and goaltending. I don't think we will have a hard time reaching the floor. Heck we have to move out a player this offseason just to not exceed the ceiling. You're usually a pretty good poster, but you're pretty out to lunch on this topic. You're talking about an organization that hasn't drafted top 3 in their 43 year history. Even when we went through this last rebuild we had guys like Giordano, Brodie, Hudler, Cammalieri who prevented the top 3 pick. Same thing this time around except the "leftover guys" make an insanely large boat anchor capwise. It's even worse this time.
The Flames historically being unwilling to rebuild and different from whether or not they could. They could, easily. They probably won't but they could.

Different scouting group. And I don't think for a minute that a GM makes these picks in isolation.
Sutter set the criteria he wanted

Hard to blame Button for that, especially with the reputation Darryl Sutter had in terms of being hands-on with choosing first round picks.

Harder to believe Seravalli is 34 years old than the Flames making changes in the offseason
I remember looking up his age a few years ago (maybe when he was 30ish) and couldn't believe it. Thought it was a typo. At the time I was thinking, how does this dude look 15 years older than his age. lol

Yeah I think they're a coach away from being a very good team. I honestly think a coaching change is what will stop Calgary from making the playoffs this year.

I just don't want more high quality players walking for nothing or being signed to stupid contracts turning picks into albatrosses. Lindholm, Backlund, Toffoli, Tanev, Hanifin, Zadorov and Kylington are all UFAs after next year. All should be traded or signed to VALUE contracts. Time to get serious about our chances of winning a cup (which are pretty close to zero).

We lost Giordano, Gaudreau, Iginla, Kipper, JBo and Phaneuf for nothing and turned a homerun Tkachuk trade into a bad deal with extensions. This can't keep happening.
Nobody is going to sign value contracts for a team like the flames.

Not really, a pick in the 10-15 range is pretty interesting for MTL.
Yeah. So both Florida and the Flames need to suck. I’m betting one of them will be a playoff team in 25. Most likely Florida

My guess is Gudreau leaves as a Free agent (probably signs with a random team like NSH or CBJ) and I think they end up trading Tkachuck to a team like the Canes or Panthers.

People have the memory of a goldfish around here. We are a year removed from Huberdeau being second in league scoring, Kadri being among the best 2C in the league on the best team in the league, Lindholm scoring 40 while being runner up for the Selke, Markstrom a Vezina finalist, Tanev being looked at as one of the best defensive D in the league, and Mangiapane being a world championship hero then potting 35 goals. Yet when the good years happen people say that won’t ever happen again, then the bad years happen and people like you say “Welp that’s just who they are now” and we apparently have no nice pieces.
Nobody is going to sign value contracts for a team like the flames.
What? Calgary’s entire dilemma going into next season is we have too many value contracts that were mostly signed by the Flames that are beginning to expire? Why is nobody going to take value contracts when we have about a decade stretch of getting players on said contracts?

Honestly if the rumors are true about Sutter and he needs to go, I hope we replace him with a more run and gun style coach. Either Boudreau, or from whatever playoff team that management decides to throw a tantrum and fire their coach because of an earlier than expected playoff exit. We have a whole bunch of players that if they played up their offensive potential that they’ve previously shown, we could score a lot of goals as a team. Our defense with Kylington back on paper should be able to weather the storm, and Markstrom going back to just his recent career average is a strong goalie who has shown he can thrive on volume.

Markstrom, Huberdeau and Kadri might just end up being tank commanders. If Lindholm wants out then the Flames might as well just start a rebuild.
It’s hard to fully commit to a rebuild when you know Montreal is holding either your 2024 or 2025 first.

If you commit, you let Montreal take the 2024 pick and make you sure tank hard for 2025

Was wondering a while ago if something could be done around their first we own and Hanifin since he seems to be the odd man out on their D core. We We Will need a good young vet on our top 4 who can do it all except scoring in his case

Lindholm - I think he resigns next season with Calgary, likely around the 8M/ year mark.

Tanev - move him at the deadline to a contender for picks.

Hanifin - move him this summer if you get a good offer. He would get a decent return with his low caphit. I think his days as a Flame are numbered.

Toffoli - I think he walks for nothing next summer but he would be the first I trade from this list as he's having a career year and his value is sky high.

Zadorov - I would trade him this summer while his value is sky high with the great season he's been having this year. No promises he plays as good next season. He's shown that he can be a capable top 4 dman.

Kylington - see how he plays then decide whether to trade or resign him

Backlund - I think he goes to a contender next year.

I would also consider shopping Coleman and Andersson. Andersson would get a lot of interest. Coleman perhaps but I think the Flames would have to retain some of his salary. Tough to justify his cap hit for a 3rd liner.

What are they going to do? Try to trade those enormous Huberdeau, Kadri, and Weegar contracts for Tkachuk and Gudreau?

I don’t think anyone wants those long contracts without retention or a terribly long contract in return.

Maybe the best they can do is swap one for Seth Jones.

They’d just be gambling that Florida will be better if they do. Outside of some unlikely scenarios it will be Montreal getting the lower first between Calgary and Florida in 2025.
