Chances America Overtakes Canada in the Next 50 years?

Given that hockey is 1st sport in Canada, and like 123234th sport in USA, I'd bet "extremaly unlikely" option.
 
In 1996 I was beyond convinced that it was only a matter of time. The sheer numbers, money available to throw at development etc. That was 30 years ago.
 
Canada still has the most boys playing minor hockey of any country, but the USA is second and they're in the ballpark with Canada. Every other country is way behind.

Hockey is still very popular in Canada. Last I checked, over 14% of Canadian boys play minor hockey; and about 1.2% of American boys play minor hockey. The US has somewhere close to 10x the number of boys, so it's competitive.

It will be interesting to see where this goes in the coming years.

Hockey will remain popular in Canada. Will the USA pick it up some more? It's great for hockey if they do.

Ya per capita, they would never overtake Canada.
 
We have heard this since 1996 and I am not sure the US are any closer to overtaking Canada now than they were then.

People will look at them winning 2 WJHC's ignoring the Canadian wins before that and ignoring that Canada was missing players- Bedard, Celebrini etc. that would have had them winning those tournaments easily.

It may be possible but no way is it definite or even likely. Even though the 4 nations was close it was still a Canadian win, just like the previous best on best tournaments have been recently.
 
It's bound to happen at some point. How long will they stay on top ? Who knows, but half a century is a LOOONG time. Given the development of USA hockey and population difference, it will happen at some point. Hell the teams are about as close as it gets right now, USA may very well win Gold in 2026.
