Champions Hockey League

Lulea seems to be very "special".

I feel our team is essentially “deep” and “built for the playoffs”, but the reality of this season has been that if we allow two goals, we’re very likely not winning that game. We’re able to hang with the best of them, own possession and outshoot any SHL opponent, but we’re parodically awful at finding the net and sit at the 12th spot out of 14 teams in the league.

At the moment, however, we’re pretty safe from relegation play being 8 points ahead of 13th, and we’re also just 4 points out of a playoff berth, but with the season being the way it’s been thus far, it felt really nice getting to eliminate Frölunda in the CHL and having a chance at returning the trophy to its original home!

The only thing i want, is that those swedish clown referees don't get to do the Final, The game at Zug was a shitshow and i bet Zug fans would agree on that.

There should've been 20 penalties called on both teams, but somehow these clowns got 4 for Tappara and 0 for Zug.

IF you are talking about Zug, they need to get a refund from the refs.

Very cool to see Finland-Sweden again. Its just mad to think that Luleå is 12th in SHL and Tappara will play them at CHL-final. That just tells how strong SHL is. And its going to be a tight game for sure. Hoping for Tappara victory, its time to take the trophy to Finland.

Wasnt JYP also very low in Liiga when they won the CHL? Its weird sometimes how that works

They said in the intermission that they will reduce the amount of teams next season from 32 to 24. 3 teams from each of the bigger leagues and a the rest will be made up of wild card spots. How the wild card spots will be decided I have not the slightest.
If the wild cards are decided through some sort of qualification/merit of how you played in your own league last year, then it's all good. If they are hand picked by the CHL executives the tournament is only going to lose even more status among the Swedish crowd.

Here's information on the new format, I can't say that I'm a fan.

They finished 4th in the regular season, then knocked out in quarter-finals (had one epic meltdown losing game they led 5-0)
They were lower but got a good boost out of the CHL win? Or maybe I just remember it entirely wrong.

I'm still soure from that first finals appearance loss. Fabricatious with stick to own face resulted in 2 + 2 in dying minutes of the game. Frölunda had it in the bag up until then. Still hate his guts for selling it.

The referees shouldn’t be Swedes, no, however if they’re SHL refs it’ll be interesting seeing whether their conspiracy against us will continue, or if their agenda to secure a Swedish CHL win at all costs will prevail :)

Yeah, that did seem to reverse the momentum for sure.

Luleå are a real hardnosed Norhern boy-bad-to-the-bone-team led by chaps like Juhani Tyrväinen and "Uncle" Leo Komarov - yep, Finland boys.
Their coach is the ever so angry Thomas "Bulan" Berglund - and yes "Bulan" means someting like; a bruise ...

Tappara o' Tampere are strong as ever - a Finland hockey powerhouse/stronghold year in and year out.
In Europe too, remember.

Could be a good final (CHL) one this one!

No, they were quite consistenly around 4th place most of the season.

Next season was a tough one for them, trailing below playoff line for a long time, changed coach mid-season and ended the season in the 1st round of playoffs.

SHL is obviously very good league but moreover it tells about how weak this whole CHL concept is. Teams barely break even if they get through from their group stages, for many team participating to CHL nets losses instead of profits. That's ridiculous.

I cant really get the point here. It tells that SHL is a damn strong league and Tappara, as a top dog of finnish league, will have to play its best game in a whole season to win them.

"With scientific help of experts in competition design..." Holy fekk,
thanks for a good laugh!

CHL has some ways to go before it’s taken close to as seriously as domestic championships, but it seems that all you want to do — regardless of the eventual results — is to complain that this is all bullshit that we’re chumps for caring about.

Too many teams and matches. Too long time period. Make it 8 teams and knock outs immediately.

I like having lower tier leagues in the tournament. If Luleå wins it and thus qualify for next year’s competition, I’m planning on and would love to make a trip to watch hockey in the UK, Denmark or Poland.

There seem to be some confusion as to just who how you qualify for a wild card spot

As a Cardiff Devil Fan I think other teams were happy when our fans cross the channel to attend games. A few of the games there were more Devil fans than home fans

The final is tonight. Some illness has run rampant among the visiting team, but it seems that it has faded away at the eleventh hour. They fielded the best line-up for weeks against Lukko on Thursday. The defenceman Matushkin and the forward Jonathan Davidsson were missing for no apparent reason, though. Possibly just rotation. However, they were reportedly in team practice today. Therefore Tappara is only missing two center forwards both of whom are injured. The beloved team captain Otto Rauhala would be valuable on penalty kill and secondary scoring. Second-line center Patrik Virta is also missing. However, Tappara's squad has depth this spring, especially among forwards. No room in roster for any talented youngsters tonight. Reportedly the team was practicing with these lines:

Merelä - M.Davidsson - Levtchi
Puhakka - Ikonen - Ojamäki
Savinainen - Lehterä - Tanus
Granath - Platt - Kuusela
J. Davidsson

Tuulola - Jürgens
Kemiläinen - Vittasmäki
Seppälä - Matushkin
Thomas

Heljanko will start in goal, backed by the experienced Hovinen who joined the team this week to fill in for the injured back-up goalie Heikkinen.

Around 1,000 Tappara fans have travelled to Luleå, many of whom have bent over backwards to get tickets, as the away quota wasn't sufficient the meet the demand. It's going to be a spectacular event. Hopefully a great battle on the ice as well. Expectations are loaded because of the epic last year's final.

Pretty excited for this!

The CHL has been pretty much the only thing going for us this season, so the chance of crowning a down year with the CHL championship means a lot to the fans.

Oscar Engsund was suspended last SHL round and it carries over into the CHL, which is a tough break: he’s an awesome, physical defensive defenseman when dialed in, and hurts playing against. At least Julius Honka is reported to return, he’s been our best puck moving blueliner this year.

I wonder who’s going to get the nod in net. Matteus Ward barely got to play in the SHL for the first half of the season, and instead had the CHL as his venue to prove himself in competitive games. He was badly exposed in his first SHL start, and I was surprised and anxious when Luleå kept him as starter even for the semifinals against Frölunda, however he did well there, and has since earned starts and outplayed Lassinantti in the SHL. As of today, Ward was pretty bad in his last start, and perhaps he’s been relied upon too heavily lately. On the other hand, Lassinantti hasn’t looked good for a pretty long while, and also, Ward’s been our CHL goalie throughout the season so perhaps we’re not changing that. And with that being said, Lassinantti’s always been the safe, reliable option when the chips are down and games matter the most. We’ll see.

Can’t say expectations are all too high given how bad our season’s been overall, but for just one game to restore some pride, I hope the boys will bring their best game all season and give us fans our second CHL title!
