As I said before, your not replacing Hanifin (this season). Bahl or Miromanov could both be better than Tanev.

It's funny though, when the aging FA contracts were coming everyone said Hanifin, Lindholm, Tanev etc. Couldn't get it done in the playoffs. Now that they've been traded for assets and younger players they and suddenly inreplacable and the Flames are a bottom 3 team in the league.

Not as much last season but over the previous 3 Tanev was hands down the best defensive d-man in the league statistically. To suggest either of those 2 could be better than Tanev is a pretty hot take.

Also there is a huge difference between getting it done in the playoffs and preventing your team from being bad. Calgary's post Hanifin trade (since he was the last one moved) record was 8-13-0, that's a 62 point pace. You are also not factoring in that Markstrom was traded this offseason and he was top 5 in GSAx last year.

This is the usual copium spouted by fans that want to be on endless rebuild cycles.

Odds of guys like Bahl and/or Miomanov being better than anyone the Flames lost are super low.
Younger seldom means better, especially when guys like Hanifin, and Tanev were showing way more at the same age than the new guys have.

How is it copium? The Flames are like 18 months into Conroy's plan for a quick retool via rebuild. It's not close to an endless cycle. The Flames are also hoping to surprise teams and get back into playoffs this season or next season. Many of us Flames fans are also hoping for one more dip and then a rapid ascension back up the standings.

We've seen articles from both players and management stating that is basically what they want, or the vets would like the option of departing as they don't want to end their careers on a long rebuild.

Ah I see what you mean now. I still don't think it's copium. It's because management and roster want to get back to playoffs as soon as possible, we as fans can't count the possibility out. The roster we iced in 2014-2015 (perfect year to be bleh) wasn't expected to do anything either and that group inexplicably dragged themselves into the second round.

Conroy is sitting on a ton of assets. An inexplicably good trade or two, a prospect or two that suddenly starts developing to be NHL ready faster than expected... all of a sudden the roster may look like it has run or two in it before Backlund retires.

I don't think any Flames fan thinks this roster as is might surprise. It's that they think if the roster overperforms and Conroy lucks into an inexplicably good trade, it's suddenly a dark horse candidate to do some damage in the first or second round. If that happens, that's gravy, but certainly not expected as of now. No, we don't expect PTOs and late round acquisitions to suddenly play like superstars. We're expecting a possibility our group could against the odds suddenly click and win games they're not supposed to.

If you look at the expectations for the Flames for the last decade, we're typically good when we're supposed to be bad, bad when we're supposed to be good for an average of mediocre. That's why many of us are basically, "I want this... but I dunno what I'm gonna get." As an Oilers' fan, shouldn't you know this? I'd assume it's low hanging fruit for when you want to rub salt in our wounds.

This is one Flames fan that thinks this roster will surprise a lot of people this season. For the better.
