Why? It's not like the flames are contending.
Aside from goodwill towards our old players, it's mostly hatred for the Oilers TBH. And to repay Flame fans for their support during the final. Hope they make the playoffs, meet Edmonton in the first round, and beat them with Lomby scoring that game winning goal ;). Off-season is for dreaming, y'know...

Thrilled to have him back. Is there anything better than falling completely and hopelessly in fan love with a completely replaceable 4th line energy player?
Nothing better, mate. Plus, he's apparently allergic to clothes, which is an additional bonus for me as a straight woman. Although I imagine that might be a bit more difficult in Calgary than Florida.

There are dreams and then there are situations completely incapable of happening in any multi-universal reality. :sarcasm:

Blows me away how many GM's let their players who have motors go for so cheap. This is one of my favourite players in the league and it only took 2 million to get him. Great contract for Calgary and I'm jealous.
Lomberg had 7 points in 75 games and sat a good chunk of the cup run. Love the guy, but he is a league min player.

Guys who are consistently good on the forecheck and bring energy to teams are ridiculously underrated for 4th lines.

The Canucks constantly find a gem once in a while for a 4th line and they always ship them off to free agency because they ask for 1.5-2 mill and then replace them with dogshit players who have more skill but end up being a net negative because they can't forecheck but put up 10 more points and get scored on a lot more because they don't keep the puck in the opponents end.

Players who have motors keep the momentum your star players generate by keeping teams away from your end. The points don't matter to me when they're allowing more opportunity for your top lines to continue hemming the other team in by coming in waves.

So many teams piss away 4th liners that do their job of keeping energy for your team and providing them with hits and dragging them into games. Lomberg isn't a point getter but he's a phenomenal player to have on your team and worth the 2 million easily. I'll take a 7 point a season guy that shows up every game and brings intangibles over a 25 point a season guy who provides nothing else any day.

For 1M more you could have got a 40 goal scorer in Skinner.

Oh well. Lomberg has a really big head for his body though, that’s pretty cool.
That would not help the tank. And I seriously doubt Skinner would play in Calgary.

A bit overpaid for a guy who was riding the press box for much of the Playoffs, but he's a likable player.

I initially thought this was kind of a stupid contract to give to him. I do think culture is important during a rebuild or you end up like Ottawa or Buffalo. Backlund, Coleman, Kadri, Weegar and Andersson are the tone setters, but they are also the guys most likely to be moved for futures since no one really wants a guy like Huberdeau or Kuzmenko until the TDL of their expiring year. Much as he's not anything more than a run of the mill 4th liner, he could potentially help set culture if some of those bigger pieces are moved. We also have 20+M in cap space.

Yeah. Florida never could have won the Cup without those 7 minutes per night Lomberg provided in 8 games through their playoff run......

While you're stat tracking, it might be helpful to acknowledge he was injured during that stretch during which he helped win a cup.

I mean, Edmonton's bottom 6 being a blackhole of everything has been their main issue for 5 years. McDavid didn't get any better this year, the bottom 6 did.
And now players are taking discounts to play in Edmonton. If a contending team can't find a good 4th line player, that's on the GM.

Florida is an example of smart GMing. They paid Lomberg 800k and walked away when he was looking for more.

Okay so what does that have to do with this? They want veteran help instead of a bunch of rookies getting worked in the bottom 6. We do not have any traditional bottom 6 wingers on the team.

Retain half and trade next year, whatever.

Hell I'd vastly overpay for a #3/#4 defender on a short contract too.

In Calgary's position its fine to overpay guys like Lomberg on short term contracts.

I was just refuting the point that guys like Lomberg are underrated.

Guys like Lomberg are very important, having a 4th line that doesn't get caved in and provides energy is huge. Edmonton fans should know the truth of that more than anyone considering you didn't have a bottom six for a decade. Christ a year ago you guys were freaking out about losing Kostin.

Yes, congrats you got a couple guys willing to take discounts this year. That's not the usual scenario, a team going all in for a cup means players can pad their stats and hopefully get a retirement contract after. That's a bonus from teams being summer favorites and it can all disappear just as quick.

Not going to be like, oh we should have gotten Drouin, that's better value. Like ya, he took less to stay on the team. Or I was pumped about Dueher, he was supposed to be this guy but then laid an egg this year.

Lomby was great for us, but he's overpaid at 2M. We got Greer to do more or less the same job at 800k. Not as good a fighter, but we're saving 1.2M for a team that desperately needs the cap. You can't be a contender in this league and pay guys like Lomberg 2M.
