Barrie isn't as bad defensively as people make him out to be.

Like he's not good, at all, but on your bottom pair and paired with the right person, he is passable and you can do worse.

Pretty pointless. Even in a best case scenario, Barrie isn't returning anything of actual value at the deadline. Maybe a 5th round pick if they're lucky.

Might be good for the tank though.

Idk about that. I see Barrie putting up a lot of points with the Flames. He should get to run their pp and get lots of cherry ice time. Playoff teams are always looking for D at the TDL. He might reel in a late second.

Craig Conroy is clearly thinking ahead to the big day when he trades Rasmus Andersson this season. Gotta have someone to fill that hole on the right side.
Two moves ahead of everyone else folks.
Why wait? The Barrie is ready to go and we need Andersson to salvage Nurse right now

If he has a strong camp with Flames the Oilers can always sign him to a deal.
Pay back for Versteeg was it?

Eh, he's a known commodity. A bottom pairing defensive liability that can maybe still put up points on the powerplay. How many cup contending teams need a pure powerplay specialist?

And as mentioned, there's also the risk of cannibalizing Andersson's return; if Barrie takes his powerplay time, Andersson's point totals go down and so does his potential return.

Lol, Barrie isn't getting more PP time than Andersson and/or Weegar.

I don't see why you are so certain of that. He is a powerplay specialist, that's the 1 thing he is truly good at. It's not that different from Gostisbehere getting PP1 time in Detroit over Seider despite playing primarily on the 3rd pair

The problem with Barrie is that he's no longer good at it. He might be able to bounce back but seems injuries and age has taking its toll on him.

He was a cap dump in the Ekholm trade and was so bad in Nashville that he was an healthy scratch for basically the entirety of 2024 starting late January and Nashville couldn't find anyone to take him. He's not returning anything.

No one else wanted to give him a shot eh. I don't see the fit or appeal for either the team or the player. Weegar and Anderson are both righties that are literally better in every way.

Calgary clearly tanking for a lottery pick here. Barrie is worse than useless and didn't belong in the NHL even during his prime.

He's still good on the PP. Nashville just has Josi, who is better. (Or at least, the team believed he was better, although it's probably somewhat debateable, just in terms of pure PP effectiveness).

Injuries probably weren't as much a problem in Nashville as his trade request was. Once he asked for a trade a couple months into the season, he became persona non grata. And nobody was going to trade for him at a $4.5M Cap hit, even with retention. Nor do contenders/deadline Buyers usually need that sort of player even at the TDL when a retained Cap hit would pro-rate down.

He certainly has a limited niche which is why he's only getting a PTO with a tanking/rebuilding team. But for a team which has that niche spot available - and Calgary does seem like a possible candidate - then he can still play in the league and likely be very good on the PP.

He is? Then why did he suck on Preds PP last season? 0 goals and 6 assists in 41 games while averaging almost 3 minutes per game on the PP doesnt scream good PP-specialist.

Interesting. He must have looked good doing it, because my recollection had been that we wished he was used more often.

But those numbers indeed are not good.

That guy thinks the only good D in the league play for his Canucks.

Every other D is an ECHL caliber defender

Hope he does well - well enough to get a contract with a team not named the Flames.

Between Barrie, Brandon Davidson, Tyler Pitlick, etc, the Flames keep picking up my favourite mediocre Oilers lol.

There's nothing left in that tank. Barrie is done in the NHL.

I really bought in and believed in the guy when he was traded to the Leafs. I watched highlights, and saw his ice-time numbers and thought he could carry a big load for a winning team. He quickly proved me wrong as an absolute waste of a roster spot.

He puts in no effort, he's afraid of contact, he makes stupid decisions, he skates to the wrong spot, he gets beat 1on1, he's not even a quick skater, he won't battle at the front of the net, his breakout passes stink. He's like a custom built terrible hockey player.

And all of that was a whopping 5 years ago, with Toronto, so he's only slowed and aged since then. Plus his time in Nashville would have been soul crushing. He clearly didn't take being a scratch as a challenge to rise to. Instead he laid down and gave up.

I can't remember too many players I liked less. Barrie doesn't even deserve a PTO, he's beyond useless.

I'd rather my team play short handed than put Barrie on the roster. And I don't mean just dressing 5 defenders, I mean play with only 4 skaters on the ice.
