If they can get Lowry from the Jets, that's not horrible as a number 2 center. Realistically, he's a number 3, but they could do worse. No idea who they'd get from any other team who could be considered an obvious number 1.

Vegas will offer sheet RFA Draisaitl.

The Oil will have him locked up well before that is even an option. Somewhere between Scheiffele's and Barkov's deal is a good comparable.

What would be interesting is maybe exploring a trade surrounding Nuge. I know he's a tough guy to gauge value on because his current numbers aren't too sexy, but given the format for expansion (easier to protect forwards), he'd be their #1C considering what's likely available. If they end up picking 4th OA, maybe Nuge for that pick makes sense? The Oil could really use a high end RHD prospect. Not sure what additional pieces would be required to balance things out.

You have 7 forwards. Hartnell, Clarkson, Dubi, and Foligno need to be protected unless Clarkson is still on LTIR. That leaves three spaces.

Saad and Atkinson are locks, and Wennberg may take the final space. Then you're exposing Jenner and Karlsson. So either lose one of those two, lose a quality defender, or make a move prior to get something in return.

I said Wennberg "may" be available depending on what the decision is. Torts may favor a heavier player like Jenner going forward if he can rebound from his slump.
Clarkson is LTIR so it's beyond pointless to mention him the poor guy is done for his career.

That leaves Atkinson Karlson and Anderson to fill the final spot. I'm in favor of Karlson or Anderson being kept because Atkinson only has a year left and will be getting a raise. The other 2 are RFAs playing fantastic under torts.

Basically Wennberg is an impossible grab from the team especially for free. I don't blame anyone for not being able to follow every team but I do blame people for thinking near ppg young 1Cs will be let go just cause.

Vegas will definitely be able to sign UFA David Desharnais, and it's highly like Tomas Plekanec will be left exposed

Unless they trade for one or draft one, center is going to be a tough position for LV. They may have to settle for a veteran for their top guy if they want to be somewhat competitive immediately.

Minnesota and Columbus are in trouble with the expansion draft. Eric Staal and Wennberg may be two available options if moves aren't made.

Lehtera, Soderberg, Sheahan, and Granlund may be wild card options for a middle 6 center if exposed. Also depending on the teams, Killorn (who's more of a wing) and Deharnais could be left out.

I would seriously consider Stepan to LV if both Staal and Girardi were part of the package going and there was a half decent pick or 2. HOWEVER, that will not happen, cause, my understanding is, the NMCs Staal and Girardi have allow them to say no.

I get the NMCs, and this interpretation.
But then take them off the must be protected list.

I don't think there is a stone throws chance in hell you get ether of those players, at this stage in their careers to waive their NMC, and go from a contender to an upstart fresh franchise. Maybe... slightest of maybe's on Staal, but Girardi. No way.

Unless Nuge picks it up this year, his cap hit makes him a pretty unattractive target. He's not even close to being worth the 4th overall IMO.

I do not see them trading their first ever pick, for a number of reasons. I could see them wanting RNH as a #1 C though.

I think once they have drafted a team they could make a more useful offer to Edmonton, certainly a 3C and #4D and immunity for a certain player etc.

Isn't the draft in Vegas? Even if not you do not want the PR disaster of trading your first ever pick. Your golden boy, the future franchise player etc. Once they drafted and made some deals we will see what the resources are they have to make moves like that.

As for Bozak I think we have to protect him due to NMC. He could easily be dealt to LV for a D though.

I wouldn't rule it out after the Weber trade. Nashville went ahead with that despite facing possibly ruinous cap recapture penalties.

The risk of a 31 year old Weber who's been mostly injury free during his career retiring is much further down the road then a 36 year old Zetterberg with a recent back issues.

From the Oilers I wouldn't be shocked to see them take JJ Khaira. 6'3 physical center who's found his scoring touch in the AHL. He'll be 23 next year.

I'd think a better value for LV would be RNH +Oilers #1 for Vegas #1. Obviously depending on where the Oil finish the season.

I think it might be more likely that we end up trading them Nuge for one of the many 2nd pair defensemen they could take from elsewhere, and possibly a replacement 3C with lower upside.
