Celebrini for CALDER

I made a crucial error in engaging with the Michkov Mafia on a main board thread. This has nothing to do with michkovs skill or his recent play. They have this odd obsession with the "teams that passed on Matvei are being proven wrong!" when the reality is he basically chose phl. I'm not sure why I care so much or what I hope to accomplish but reality is my hfboards mission

I honestly think Michkov is going to be a decent player but yea some Flyers fans were insufferable after a short hot streak
They deserve it they were shitting on the Sharks for picking Smith. Hoping Smith can match Michkov in points (unlikely)

Calfiornia has the highest State Tax, which causes Free Agents to give pause and the cost of living is extremely high. San Jose is is strip mall city with little culture.

The odds of players actively wanting to sign as free agents with the Sharks has gone up significantly with Celebrini being as good as he is. If we get lucky and Smith has a strong second half stapled to Celebrini's wing and Warsofsky doesn't pull any more bullshit putting Smith with grinders, we might have an even better chance.
We will continue to be an unattractive FA destination for as long as we continue to languish at the bottom of the standings

Players want to sign to play for a winning team, not to play along side a talented teenager on a bottom feeder

Outside of maybe 5 cities the US has no "culture." And despite it's lack of "culture" there's a reason why the bay area is one of the most sought after places to live in the country.

Frankly, I wish the Sharks were in SF. (Not the Cow Palace, mind you) Yes, I've lived in a lot of different places in the Bay Area with the exception of Marin County and San Jose just wasn't great.

Yeah, but nobody that we got last year was much in demand and the two most in-demand guys we got we had to overpay for. I think if the Sharks weaponize their cap room or use their picks from trading off the UFA's to overpay for a couple of RHD at a higher AAV for 2 years, the lure of wanting to play on Celebrini's left wing may be enough to entice a better left wing to come play with him. Not an elite wing, but someone that's maybe a good 2nd line LW that wants to be a first-iine guy.

The superstars aren't going to want to come yet.

UFAs tend to react to team results

Until the team actually looks like not just a playoff team but an actual threat to do damage there won't be any real interest from high end free agents to come here

As you said, Toffoli had more reasons to come here than the quality of the team (family reasons, desire to stop moving every year, full NTC for 3 years, decent overpay, has already won a cup), and Wennberg got a HUGE overpayment to come here that no one else would have offered, we paid a glorified 4th liner like a middle-6 scoring forward

We're not getting any of the big UFAs this summer, there will be some team out there that can offer a big contract that also didn't finish bottom-5 in the standings for the 3rd year in a row, the best we can hope for are some 2nd tier options that we have to overpay like we did last summer, and the impact they have on our team will be negligible

If we want to make an impact addition we're better off exploring the trade market

I do wonder how much of it was Doug not trying to lure any of the marquee names or them not wanting to, or perhaps his unwillingness to go max term?
i believe it was a compound of no one makes more than jumbo, alongside no 15 year deals to lower cap hit.

Coming from the East Bay, it would be a lot easier for me as well if they were in SF. It's a little easier with the Berryessa BART stop but I need them to finish the rest of that extension before I get too old.

My wife likes the Spaghetti Factory though so we end up just driving and parking in San Pedro Square anyway.

I've lived all over the Bay and while I didn't mind living close to the Prunyard, going to the Brit Arms while fun wasn't exactly culture. San Pedro was also fun but again not exactly a cultural mecca either.

It's unfair to compare San Francisco to San Jose becuase San Francisco has so much history and culture and history, I just never felt like I would bring a friend to visit and see the sights of San Jose. We'd always go to San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland, and the East Bay.

Have done Santa Cruz and even did a date on the Roaring Camp Railroad, which was fun and even a date at a SJ giants game, but San Jose has too much of a LA feel to me without the good parts of LA (Yes, there are a few.)

I guess it's just personal preference. I absolutely loathe going to SF of all cities in the bay area.
Agreed. I can attend so many games (all of them this year) because SAP is so accessible. Commuting to SF for Chase Center/AT&T Park is brutal in comparison. SF is much more difficult to get around outside of public transport.

So it’s looking like it’ll be between Hudson and Mack
Always trust the betting odds.

Celly down to the fav at -120
Michkov in 2nd at +150
Hutson in a distant 3rd at +500

I will say odds on futures like this can be a week behind in updating, during the summer i grabbed Skenes for CY young at +12500 and in 2 weeks it was down to +1500, so take these with a grain of salt.

But i am sitting on a Celly +500 ticket from the start of the year
