I can’t imagine wanting to sacrifice not one not two not three but four years of your life rooting for the team to fail.
The thing is, this team was going to fail for four or more years when Grier was hired, no matter what Grier did.

Tank or no tank, this team was doomed to be a bottom-feeder for years after Wilson was finally pushed out the door, whether management wanted to go all in to try and compete or not, because the cupboard was full of expired or pointless crap, leaving no room for improvement without throwing just about everything away first.

There was no way to build a playoff team, or even a team capable of having a slim chance of reaching the playoffs, by 2025, given the situation the Sharks were in during the summer of 2022. We were legitimately that bad. We still are, but now there's light at the end of the tunnel.

The odds of players actively wanting to sign as free agents with the Sharks has gone up significantly with Celebrini being as good as he is. If we get lucky and Smith has a strong second half stapled to Celebrini's wing and Warsofsky doesn't pull any more bullshit putting Smith with grinders, we might have an even better chance.

Expecting it is different than wanting it is my point. I wouldn’t mind getting McKenna and DuPont but I would also be disappointed that we had an additional two more years of absolute bottom of the barrel failure.

If nobody wanted to sign in san jose with thornton, marleau, pavs, burns, karlsson, boyle on the team then Celebrini really isn't going to change that either.

I do wonder how much of it was Doug not trying to lure any of the marquee names or them not wanting to, or perhaps his unwillingness to go max term?

Maybe Wilson just wasn't very good at negotiating with free agents. There could be many, many reasons.
