Frequent soft goals is terribly deflating.
Yeah he also kept them in a few games they didn’t have any business being in. He was a net positive IMO. The scoring dried up.

If the Caps could’ve managed a win in that OT game maybe they would’ve bought some more time to hit on a winning strategy to counter the Canes. Oh well.

Carolina is a championship caliber team IMO and they are well seasoned with multiple deep runs.

Big offseason for GMCP despite the paucity of capspace hopefully he pushes the right buttons and they come back stronger next year.

Didn't say I was. You have a problem with looking for/hoping for better next year? WTH, man?
I didn’t say you were. I’m saying they are kinda stuck in a quagmire money wise and roster structure wise. They won’t have the money to go after a big fish and if they don’t, I don’t know who their best player is next year.

With Mission 895 in rear view mirror, the team will not be reliant upon Ovie to be more than its 3rd or 4th best player, which is consistent with what he probably has left in the tank.
I have to be honest, I love OV but you might have to move him to the 3rd line. Either that or OV needs to cut down his weight and change his eating habits.

Ilya ain’t making the Caps. Hell, Nelson won’t play him in Hershey.

I don't care either way. I'm done with the NHL for this year until camp. I don't care about the draft of any other crap until then. If they make moves that's great, but it's hiking and gardening season for me. At least I don't have to watch those clowns on the panels. Messier the only one with cups while they act like fools.

Well at least we know what changes we need to make in the offseason
OV got his record, he will hinder this team moving forward. It’s clear we cannot get far in the playoffs with him. I hope he recognizes this and retires. Yes it may mean a few less goals next season but it will help the team develop a new identity quicker.

That said he won’t retire because everyone will want him to have a farewell tour. My only hope for him is that he gets in better shape. Yes he was this season relative to last but that’s not saying a lot.

I might add this was LT's 1st two playoff series he finished in. I think he will learn and only get better.

Ovi can still play, but his usage needs to be PP + 3rd/4th line minutes.

Very, very, very little elevation on this roster at this point. Not super surprising when relying on a 39-year old franchise winger and 35-year old #1D. But they also probably need to thin the ranks a bit. Sandin? What's he good at exactly? Dowd was one of their worst players this series...just as bad or worse than Eller. McMichael at 3C seemed just fine. Probably should have went to it earlier.

They just do not keep the legs churning...not even with the season on the line. Too much passive spectating and indecision. For me it's the 8/74 combo and then another skating-challenged key core player in Strome that basically defines and limits them as a team. The rest of the roster isn't explosive enough to withstand that degree of sag, particularly when it comes to the PP and how easily PP1 can be handled (regardless of 74 or no 74).
Don’t disagree. 8 and 74 are off the books next summer, lots of good young pieces to be optimistic about and a great pro scouting staff to retool when that cap space opens up.

In the meantime I think this series was enough of a learning experience that they have a fighting chance in a series against Carolina next year.. and it certainly looks like the path to the ECF will run thru Raleigh for the foreseeable future

You think Protas has any promise as a center?

Replacing Ovie and Carlson on PP1 will make a big difference.
