Not really completely a fan of how Jarmo has built the team currently, but, it’s fascinating how anybody could have a problem with Jarmo or the teams cap situation AFTER signing Gaudreau.
There is NO WAY that signing Gudbranson DIDN’T have a positive impact on signing Gaudreau. I’d put money that Gudbranson signing here had a much bigger impact on Gaudreau than Laine’s future with the team. Ridiculous how upset people were over his signing (even to start) as he is the EXACT type of player the team needed and JUST HOW BAD they have been on D. To trot out the same exact defense we had last year would have been the ACTUAL “fireable offense”.
It’s MUCH better to be in “cap hell” than it is being in “standings hell”. To take it a step further, what does that term actually mean, up against the cap? Let’s see a list of good/playoff teams that are not in “cap hell”.
Without the signing of Gaudreau the team wouldn’t be in this “cap hell”. Other than a big tough defensive guy, all the team “needed” or should have been looking to add was a TRUE high level/elite player, preferably a center or defenseman.
However, and who really cares WHAT the reason is at this point, when an opportunity or EXTREME interest exists from a guy like that, as Jarmo has said, you make the move. IF ANYTHING, why isn’t Jarmo getting credit for leaving the team with flexibility to make the Gaudreau move unexpectedly.
The team is better with Gaudreau than they would be with anybody else, the wings were ALREADY loaded up before, and quite frankly it’s not the end of the world if we lose any other wingers at this point.
That said, I think some people are still brushing off the fact that we are now EVEN MORE “winger heavy”, and still lacking at other positions or certain roles. Regarding trade value and future, “cap hell”, maybe Nyquist isn’t the easy answer to move, it’s the higher paid winger, with MUCH higher trade value, that will be in the NHL much longer.
