I prefer "how young our other defenseman are" vs bad...still learning...hope for another step forward this year

The problem isn’t the “young defenseman”, the “offensive defenseman”, the “defensive defenseman”, or “the forwards”.

The problem is the combination of all of them, with varying levels of “guilt” or “blame” spread across the roster and coaches.

We’ll see how much Gaudreau/Gudbranson changes/helps the team and just how much “growth” there is from the younger players who have the ability to play a more mature game, but, I just don’t think people have a realistic idea of just how much and how many guys we need to drastically change how they see the ice defensively.

I don’t like the “look” or “fit” of our defense (or our centers), and that’s before they hit the ice. Last year seemed to prove fears that many fans had. IMO I see Gudbranson having a bigger positive impact on the team defense than the “growth” from the other defenseman.

How about we let them, I don't know, maybe get on the ice before passing judgment based on last year and calling it a fact for this year already

Hes not really saying anything too outrageous though. The team does have a lot of offensive minded guys and its going to take some real growth from Peeke, Bean and Boqvist along with the Gudbranson from last year to shore up the D.
Id expect the team will be a better possession team this year though and will alleviate some of the stress on the defense and goaltenders.

And if it goes bad this year, we just do the same thing next off season??

Or, are evaluations based on 1 season “passing judgement”, and 2 seasons is acceptable??

We basically turned over 1/2 our defense going into last year...there were a lot of growing pains...if there's no progress this year, then yes, I'll be right there saying we need to make a change...but going to at least let them get on the ice and show they haven't grown first

So our defense sucks because they feel guilty?!? Tell me more about this.

It comes from the top.
Mngt/Ownership acquired all those guys. Then hired a coach who (at least off season) didn't seem to care about playing defense.
I get it no one wanted to be reminded of Torts.
I just find it imposible to beleive that ownership didn't insist on plaing a wide open game last year.

I don't think ownership has any say in dictating how this team plays. If they do than we have some major problems. Obviously I'm not in the know, but I would imagine they leave it up to Jarmo on how to assemble this team. I don't think they care how we play, as long as they win and there's asses in the seats.

I would agree that Jarmo wanted to play a faster paced game, which means a more offensively minded blue line. Last year was the first year that a lot of these guys were depended upon. This will be a huge year for guys like Bean who desperately need to solidify themselves or risk getting passed up in the next year or two.

We lost 18 games last year by 1 goal and quite honestly we were not very good. Should we play a semblance of better defense, and get some really decent goaltending there I am pretty confident our offensive play can be even better. Looking forward to actually watching a few games before I condemn the whole season.

I'm not going to write about whether Gudbranson is overpaid or not. Let's look at it another way. How many dangerous chances have occurred just because of lost fights at the boards? How did our defensemen play in front of the net? Now a experienced veteran comes in who can help the team in that particular aspect of the game, and he doesn't play 20 minutes, and here we are think about why do we need him? Remember what Carolina d-men did with our players. Yes, Erik is slow. But he's experienced, he knows where he needs to be.

How many games did they win by 1 goal?

I think it's a blurred line (and has been for awhile) and I think in most organizations it comes directly from the top:
1. Way back John Mc hired Hitch, not who IDWT wanted at all.
2. More recently do you think Jarmo wanted JD rehired? Nope that is ownership hiring their guy again.

So I disagree that all ownership does is owns and they don't oversee and get involved.

First example is disputed, second example is very disputable.

I know this is framed rhetorically but I at least don't think Jarmo minded it and maybe even wanted it. He really seems to like working with him. You may know something I don't though, I'm very much an outsider.

I don't think Jarmo would mind at all, especially if JD is taking on some of the non hockey decisions and allows Jarmo to focus more on the build and day to day of the team and roster management

That's my read as well but I obviously don't precisely know how Jarmo felt about it. All I've seen is him extend with him, and really enjoy working with him on behind the battle episodes.

Very speculative stuff here but I can see Nash taking over JD's role one day if he doesn't get poached first + if Davidson wants to do something else or retire. He's not the spokesman type like Davidson but he's got tons of connections and a huge passion for hockey and the city.

Interview Erik did on a Flames Podcast!

Sounds like we got him by offering a extra year. Same dollar amount as Other offers. He’s already moved his family into a Columbus home and he’s skating with a handful of guys at the rink.

Working on a jersey number. Equipment guys (we have our eyes on these guys already) have been on him on picking a number, says he’s making a call to someone. Presumably garikov for 44

I’m very excited about this signing

They would need some more profiles. Sign all good ones left. E Rodriguez in the lead. And some more Dman.
