CBJ should pursue Erat

1. He's a veteran scorer.
2. He's Czech. Maybe he can wear #22.
3. He's the biggest Jacket killer in the league. We can't beat him so we should join him.

Downside is that he makes $4.3 million or so. And we'd have to swing a trade inside our division.

Sounds like an Umberger trade to me. But surprisingly I wouldn't even trade Umberger for him. Erat has skill but he's another Gaborik, more skill then most of our team but doesn't fit our teams in the other area's

Washington even has need at the CBJ's area of depth, but there's no way to make the money work. Very doubtful players making enough money to clear cap space for Erat's contract are going to be traded.

I like the idea, but I wonder about the stories that he's wearing out his welcome in his second stop.

You guys are probably right. Just hate seeing him light up the Jackets every time he plays them.

What about salary retained?

The Caps would have to retain quite a bit of salary to make the trade work.

Or take Wiz's contract, that would work too.

I'd expect it to be salary retained. Or Umby for Erat. I think the Caps would do that. I don't know if I care for Erat much.

Simple answer: No.

Martin Erat doesn't make us a better team. He just provides us with another second/third line forward; one that doesn't work as hard as some of the other ones we already have. Yes he's talented, but he's also wildly inconsistent, and slightly overpaid.

IMO, its a perfect chance to dump Umby. Trade Umberger for Erat and a late round pick. You save $ and cap (approximately $300,000), Erat is the more skilled player, but most importantly Erat is off the books in 2 years to Umby's 4 years.

I'll go so far as to say the CBJ should do NOTHING until it's time to trade Gabby at the deadline. I can't see us re-signing him given his current and past history of injury.

Lol. Yeah let's trade our top point getter for a 3rd liner.

Since when has leading the team in scoring been a valid argument around here?

The bolded is a reason to trade Umby, but at this point it may be the only reason (unless I'm speaking too soon). He seems to be stepping it up; sweet pass the other night for Foligno's goal, and another cleaning up on the doorstep goal tonight. And while the 2 year vs. 4 year contract swap looks good, I'm not all that sure Erat for Umberger would be good for this team.

He also said he would only waive his NMC to go to a contender.

I ready today that his issue is that he wasn't a fit and that he NMC wouldn't be an issue.

Please provide a link to the direct quote.

I don't really care one way or another, but you probably aren't dumping RJ's contract like someone suggested.

I must be weird, because I'd rather have Umberger.

Erat's done. Not worth it. Kind of reminds me of the 'we need Kostitsyn' posts a year or two ago.

I'd like to do something about Umberger's contract too, but I don't think this is the answer.

I don't think Erat's done and I do think he would be a good add but I don't think the CBJ should trade away anyone with the requisite salary it would take to be able to fit Erat, including Umberger.

Carolina is rumored to want a PMD. Wonder if there's a way to get Tlusty? His contract will be up but he's still RFA.

If you're looking to add this kind of player, that is.

Tlusty would take a PMD like you said but I'm not sure if Nikitin is offensive enough. I don't know who else CBJ could move unless they wanted to give up Erixon or something. Savard isn't enough.

2 points regarding trading Umberger-

1- he has a ntc

2- he is playing better

And I agree with SL - Erat is just more of what we have. And I agree with those who pointed out he is (probably) more trouble than he is worth.

And I agree with EK on all of the above.

I agree it would probably take Erixon, and I probably wouldn't do it. I agree Canes probably wouldn't do Savard but I'd move him if they would. Don't know if there's something that could be added to Savard - probably not.

No more European players, that's not Jackets hockey, we need guys with grit, not more floaters, we are all full up on floaters with Gaborik.

European players is not Jackets hockey? That's what you're saying? Because it sounds like that's what you're saying. So thanks-but-no-thanks to Bobrovsky, Anisimov, Tyutin, for example? And let's bail before it's too late on guys like Wennberg and Dano. And oh by the way can we get a new GM.

Your ability to oversimplify in a nationalist manner never ceases to amaze.

Number one, I feel Umby has been playing much better this season, and is on a very Umberger like goal pace.

Number two, Jacket killer Erat, imho, isn't what this team needs at this point in their development. Some day when we are in the class of a Detroit, and can add these type players then OK, but with the current building project leaning more toward youth, and guys more in their primes, he doesn't fit. Not to mention the salary issue.
