I'd love to see Columbus land Pettersson. Though I suspect a team like Carolina would once again offer Necas+ and I don't see Columbus topping that. A package from Columbus would be futures-oriented. If I'm allowed to spitball a first offer base: CBJ's 1st (top 5 protected), Provorov (50 % retained) and Sillinger? That won't do it, I understand, but I personally don't see Columbus offering up a guy like Kent Johnson at the moment.

EDIT: But I can see the FO reason like @majormajor described. And that might be for the better.

The way Necas and Pettersson have played this year, Carolina isn't offering that again. Pettersson looks very overpaid at the moment so I'm not sure if the Canucks will be getting any great offers. This is a prize you might not want to win.

That's fair enough. Maybe not Necas+ then. However, if GMs like Waddell and Tulsky were that high on Pettersson a year ago, they also might be more inclined to think that a change of scenery can get him back on track.

Gotta say, I'm shocked to see Tarasov is still a Blue Jacket.....I thought for sure something would have happened by now, but I guess they're going to still work with him.
I've always defended goalies, and saw their potential - but I'm just not seeing it in Tarasov, and would love the CBJ to get a capable back-up to assist/challenge Merzly.

A 6 million dollar 3rd pairing dman who cant be trusted in pressure situations. Going to be a real brutal one in a couple of years. Luckily this team has cap so it honestly doesnt matter but come a couple years from now, its going to be ugly.

This isnt even the first coach who has benched him, its going to only get worse as he gets older.

If memory serves, Severson was the only player to sign an 8 year deal in that 2023 free agency cycle. And only a handful of players signed deals with more than 5 years of term.

This is exactly what Devils fans warned us about with Severson. His good play is pretty good but his mistakes are absolutely horrendous. He's a real Jekyll and Hyde kind of player.

The comp for Severson is up the road in Cleveland. Severson is the Jameis Winston of offensive defensemen. Much like how Winston can look incredibly talented on one play and look like the dumbest guy in the league on the next, Severson can make a beautiful pass on one play and then a bone headed play on the next. You will never win with Jameis Winston as your quarterback. In Famous Jameis’s best season he throw for 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns. He also threw 30 interceptions and the Buccaneers finished 7-9.

Daniel Jones is the comp for Provorov. He was a disappointing high draft pick (Jones was 6OA, Provorov was 7OA). He then played reasonably well in his contract year and actually got the Giants into the playoffs. (Some credit must go to Saquon Barkley.) The Giants stupidly gave Jones a big contract and then almost instantly regretted it when he regressed to his normal self the next season.

Some interesting stats on this website: https://morehockeystats.com/teams/icings

We are last in the league when it comes to icing results by a significant margin. Teams score on us after an ice more than any other team.

We've gone offsides more than all but one team

We haven't gotten a single point in the 2nd have of a B2B (0-6-0)

We are the best in the league at scoring a quick goal after a lead change (they classify within of 2 minutes of the other team scoring)

Didn't do any other digging but this is a cool site I was not aware of

Provorov is way better than Daniel jones ever was. Like it’s not even close. Jones had one good year, and Provorov was the #1 D on some good flyers teams.

My memory of Provorov in Philly is that he was only #1D caliber for one year also - the year with Niskanen. All the years after that he was in that role but not succeeding at it, kind of like a bad starting QB like Jones.

Provorov is an easy QB comp, he's Jay Cutler. Solid/average with uninspiring body language and polarized fan opinion in a big market (when he was in Philly)

I really hope we don’t have to hear about Provorov’s wife’s post divorce sex life for the next 10 years. Just this week I saw an article on Kristen Cavallari (Jay Cutler’s ex) talking about how she had sex with Morgan Wallen. How do I tell Apple News I don’t care about that crap? I’m just trying to kill time reading Apple News articles while waiting for my new glasses at the optician, and bam.

I stand by my Daniel Jones comp.

This is what the Jackets have been missing their entire existence. We only ever usually have one guy play at this level for a full season or more.

I find this somewhat amusing - on our board we have a debate about Voronkov's next contract where some people are still shocked at the idea of paying him $6m per season. On the mains someone was posting an unrelated thread that happened to include some salary projections for teams for next year, and they penciled in the assumption that Voronkov gets $8m next year. This is not a deep analysis of the player or anything like that, it's just someone looking at his statline and jotting a number down. But they're probably closer to right. Players who do what Voronkov is doing, are 6'5 monsters, and with this cap leaping upward, are going to get paid a fortune.

I think he needs to sustain this level of play for at least one more season before expecting a $8m per year contract

jameis is a unicorn in that he is bad in a uniquely interesting way.

severson isn't a unicorn because there are a lot of other defensemen who are good 90% of the time but make BIG mistakes that make you pull your hair out (vince dunn and mike matheson come to mind)

i don't think severson has as much raw talent as the two guys i just mentioned, but i don't think the lows are nearly as low as matheson's were in florida, or dunn's in st. louis. those players need two things to succeed:
  1. the right team situation
  2. trust from the coach that the good will outweigh the bad (or ugly)
severson's deployment his last season in new jersey (when he was incredibly effective) had him carrying the third pair nominally, but with second-pair ice time. that could be his role next year, provided they two guys on the back end – a righty to pair with mateychuk on the second pair, and a low-event lefty to pair with severson on the third pair.

baker mayfield is the better comp for provorov.

high draft pick in a loaded draft, picked by a team that wore orange, had an electric start to his career and then tapered off. ends up getting moved and then re-establishes himself, is clearly a good player but not a franchise building block.

Hopefully Chinakov is back soon.. I didn’t mind Olivier in the top 6 when he was shooting at a crazy shooting %, but it’s really time to rebalance the lines a bit , maybe get KJ on Fantillis wing . Fantilli has been flying all over the ice and JVR and Reese can’t remotely keep up . I’m seeing signs that Fantilli is about to break thru , he’s really been playing much better in the past 2 weeks , need to get him atleast one player that can play with him

My observation is that Olivier offensively has dried up. Not just not scoring, but not as many shot attempts. Not sure that his ice time isn't down, but that is just eye test, have not checked stats.
Not a criticism of Olivier the player or person, just not as "hot" as he was early in the season. Almost seems like the enforcer role has become "first agenda item" - maybe not in the way of fights, but just overall "presence" on the ice. We need that - but his secondary scoring was nice too!

Just like top 6 guys can lose rhythm playing in the bottom 6 I think it works the other way. Olivier went from playing simple direct hockey to trying to keep up with skill guys and that doesnt often work

Olivier has the best chemistry with similar players. But Johnson is several grades better, Mathieu doesn't have the hockey IQ to keep up with the pace of the line play where Kent plays. Of course I can be wrong.

We are putting buckets of water on the flame that is Kent Johnson.

We need more NHL quality players. Zero depth.
