Höglander does look more tempting now than he did when the rumours about CBJ's interest in him were circulating. At this juncture, my expectation is for Provorov to go to Vancouver for a 1st and Höglander. But CBJ are not in a hurry, unlike Vancouver.

That's cool and all but it also means our secondary scoring is non existent. If those guys aren't doing it nobody else is.

Id be curious what Nsh would want for Evangelista. Even Nyquist would be a welcome addition. I guess it remains to be seen if Waddell thinks were playoff contenders or not.
Well, Trotz has been intent on burning Nashville to the ground and I did hear Evangelista was struggling at the start of the season. But that might be too much even for Trotz. And I think he got going. I can't see him being available. What do you say, @Viqsi?

I somewhat agree......you'd be surprised at guys that step up when the top lines aren't producing.
Look at how well Marner and Tavares are doing with Matthews out of the line up.
Chinakhov coming back should give KJ a jump.....maybe Fantilli too.

I agree. But they aren't in the lineup now and the ones who are aren't scoring. When the top line gets shut down it gets ugly.

I wouldn't pay much if anything for him but an honest answer would be he should be cheap to acquire, he competes, he can skate and he had a decent year last year
Lacking "secondary scoring" is a real problem but much less severe than lacking primary scoring... and usually way more easier to fix, especially for current Jackets team.
EDIT: also in this case if using 19.12. as the cutoff point, it doesn't even really mean the Jackets lack secondary scoring, just that their top guys are scoring a ton.

This is another way of getting at my complaints in the game thread. This is really close to being a playoff team, and it wouldn't cost a lot of assets to get us the missing secondary pieces to get there. And it kind of sucks that we're not doing that!
In this case, coincidentally, we really do lack secondary scoring. Everyone in the bottom nine has less than five points in the last ten games.
We dont need to burn assets to address our offence. So trading for Höglander or something similar? I dont see it. We need health and maybe some veteran UFA guy next summer like Nyquist or Palmieri to bring some depth for the time being, and our offence is set for next year.

Voronkov - Monahan - Marchenko
KJ - Fantilli - Chinakhov
Jenner - Sillinger - (Nyquist/Palmieri)
Waddell can then use the assets that we have to upgrade our defence and goaltending. If he is able to do that, we are well set to compete for playoffs spot next year.

olivier’s last 7 games average TOI: 16:39
the 7 games before that TOI avg: 14:02
he has indeed seen an uptick in ice time.
infact a few games back, he had over twenty minutes which was a career high in the 207 of them that he has played.
I really like olivier, a lot. even met him after a game, so so so down to earth but there is no rhyme or reason for him to be playing 20 minutes in a game at the NHL level.

But when the top line scoring goes dry, then you go on winless streaks.
Case in point, the NJD have lost 3 in a row because their top end has hit a dry streak and their bottom 6 can't buy a goal over the last 2+ weeks.
In the same way you need a backup goalie who can win you some games, you need some scoring depth to occasionally bail you out because the top line can't do it every night. So lacking secondary scoring is a real problem when you also lack primary scoring at the same time.

I don't understand the preoccupation with tinkering with the offense. We lose games because we can't keep the puck out of the back of our net.
On Höglander, he wouldn't cost us anything. He's having a brutal year and his contract extension is $3m x 3 starting next year. The Canucks might even pay us to take him. I'm not sure if I would take him, there is risk with his injury history that he's not going to last.
On the question of spending assets, we have an overflowing treasure trove of prospects, a lot of B level guys that we won't have ice time for. I wouldn't mind trading one or two to get veterans who can better support the young guys we have in the NHL lineup right now. I don't like the situation we are putting KJ and Fantilli in.
Our goals against is from the way our whole team plays, it's not individual D-men. Now if we made a huge defensive upgrade with a Pelech / McDonagh type, that would be different, but that's a very expensive proposition. I'd be very excited for that sort of move but I doubt it's something Wads can pull off in the short run.
By comparison, one or two good veterans could inexpensively fix our bottom 9 scoring problem. And that would potentially help our goals against if that group spends more time in the offensive zone.
One loose thought that I have had is if Olivier won't re-sign, could he possibly be included in a package along with a 1st for Brandon Carlo? Probably not, but there were reports of talks between the Bruins and the Blue Jackets for Carlo before Fabbro became available. And I think it was Portzline who said that the Bruins had called about Olivier every deadline. If that were to happen, they could roll the following D core after the TDL:

Mateychuk-Fabbro
Christiansen-Severson
Otherwise, it'll probably have to wait until the off-season, unless they acquire someone like K'André Miller.
One thing that does annoy me terribly after the Jiricek trade is looking at all the good defensive RHD that were available this summer, particularly Roy, DeMelo and Pesce. With that said, CBJ probably wouldn't have Fabbro in that case.

We agree it's not just the D-men. But rather than focus on scoring, I submit that It's also the goaltending. Let's just look at last game. Provorov shoots into a guy's pads at the end of a PP + no one is able to take the guy coming out of the box + Elvis's .807 average = puck is in the back of our net. Game over.
