Prospect Info: CBJ Prospect Thread XI

Scott Wheeler just dropped a feature article on Luca Marelli on The Athletic: Blue Jackets prospect Luca Marrelli’s breakout year is for the people who motivate him.

Going to read it now.

Edit: Shame on Wheels for making a grown man cry but really good article and reasons to be excited about what the kid might do in the future.

NCAA Tourney time...CBJ Prospects playing are all d-men...
  • Richard Guillaume, Providence
  • Luke Ashton, Minnesota State

im Honestly unsure if any of these guys get contracts. I guess it’s TBD shortly on Richard and Hreschuk, but none of these stat lines look like potential NHL players. Whitelaw and Strathmann have more time though

  • Agree on Hreschuk...he has done nothing to make me think he has any future in pro hockey.
  • Guillaume is apparently a shut down d-man and quite good at it so would not be surprised if he is tendered...have to look beyond the offensive stats.
  • If you think Whitelaw and Strathmann deserve more time (and I think neither one of them turns into an NHL player), then you should be giving Ashton more time too. There is way more to him than his offense, 6'6", 240 Lbs, skates very well and put up 5 Gs and 13 Pts as a 19-20 year old true freshman.

Is stat lines where people should be evaluating Richard?
New management that didn’t pick him. The previous management showed little signs of signing him. I could be wrong obviously.

Yeah Ashton gets more time too. Forgot to include him.

No but my point is he will be more evaluated in his own zone instead of the offensive zone. Whether they see enough in that regard remains to be seen

Curious as to what his numbers might look like on a good team

His final game was Feb 19th when he left eighteen minutes in. He missed the last twelve games. What was the injury and how serious is it? I have asked multiple people but nobody seems to be able to get information from behind the Iron Curtain.

Very willing to bet they sign Richard. I know, I know...I've pumped his tires for 4 years now and maybe the currently brass doesn't think as highly, but he's a shutdown guy that can have a role in Cleveland and could be a bottom pair or extra D in the NHL some day. He's a good player, just not flashy

The idea that we would sign guys like Knazko and then not sign Richard is a bit wild to me.

To be clear, I haven't watched any of him in college. But Richard is a rangier D that defends well, by every description of him he seems like a player we need in the org.

Last summer he was very effusive that he wanted to sign with the Jackets because of the relationships he has built here.

We have a lot of LD so it's not impossible that he looks for a club that will be easier to break in on, but we really don't have a lot of LD like him.

Another rangy LD MacDonald was signed 5 days after his college season ended. Last Friday Providence got eliminated and Richard is still unsigned.

Doesn't necessarily mean anything though, just a thing I noticed.

There’s the Richard answer

Maybe this is because of the contract limit that we’re near or it’s because he truly is playing for an ELC with Cleveland

I think the contract limit situation makes the most sense. They had more time and control in regards to guys in the organization vs college FAs

Boom. Been a big fan of Richard. I think he's going to be a very solid depth piece and a guy that can be that 5-7 guy at the NHL level and play on the PK. Good skater, good defender, good size and seems to be reasonably smart with the puck.
Sounds like a hopefully actually effective version of Andrew Peeke.

Someone pointed it out to me that I forgot, Waddell drafted him in Carolina. So he’s very familiar with him

All of this activity seems to put to bed the wondering about Waddell being active on college signings. This is way more than we've ever had in a single season. I feel like it's only 1 a year max that we've done in the past.

To be clear, we're talking about McDonald and that one other guy, right? So two.

Hreschuk and Richard didn't become college FAs, though they could have gone that route.

When it comes to actual college FAs there are very few that go on to distinguished NHL careers, sometimes none in a given year.

In all fairness, many draft picks amount to nothing too. It doesn't matter how you get them, it's appropriate scouting and the fact you do get them. Teams aren't all elite superstars.
